I am trying to set up a mixer to record vocals over instrumentals in Logic Pro X I have a behringer xenyx 802 and condenser mic. The mixer is connected to my Mac with a usb rca audio interface. I have the audio from the Mac feeding back to the mixer so I can plug headphones in and hear both the music and my vocal together. My problem is the music from the instrumental that is feeding into the mixer for my headphones is re-recording over my vocal track and sounds horrible. How do I configure the behringer so I can hear the pre-recorded instrumental but only record the microphone?

On the 802, the main out goes to the interface.

The out of the interface goes to the CD/tape input.

Monitors connect to CTRL Room output.

CD/Tape to CTRL button is pressed.

CD/Tape to Mix button is not pressed.

Control your headphone and monitor levels via Phones/Ctrl Room knob.

Control output to computer via Main Mix Knob.

Does your interface not have XLR inputs? If it does, I would advise you ditch the mixer all together. If it does NOT have XLR, and you need the mixer to get the signal into the computer, that's a slightly different story. In that case, you'll want to bypass the mixer for the output signal. Simply use the computer's audio output for your headphones. I'm not sure which software you're using, but most will offer some form of live monitoring, allowing you to hear the signal that's currently being recorded (along with the prerecorded instrumentation). You may need to adjust latency if the signal has a small delay before you can hear it.

[EDIT] I see that gecko also provided some insight that may allow you to keep using your mixer...try that first :)

As the OPS says 'USB rca audio interface' I have a feeling its one of those $29 devices that does not have any monitoring capability, just 1 or 2 RCA input jacks and USB out.
