Home Studio Parts?

Anyways, I'm planning on starting a basic home studio.

I based it on the "Large Mixer Based DAW Studio" on Tweakheadz .
I plan on producing mostly rock from my band, possibly others too.
I have a fairly good Windows computer, with a new Core 2 Duo processor and lots of RAM.

Problem is, I have pretty much no gear or software. Good thing is, I have quite a bit of cash to spend on this, in the range of $1000 to $2000. It's obviously better if I can spend less, but I'm looking for a studio where most of the parts I won't discard after a while when upgrading. In other words, I'm thinking of stuff that can be kept even up to more advanced levels.

I'm recording multiple guitars, a bass, vocals, and a drum kit, so that's quite a few microphones, and I'm likely to be doing it mostly at the same time if possible.

I've personally worked with mixers (pretty basic 12-16 track ones), and I like the physical feel of a mixer, so I'd prefer having that. I'm not sure if I want a digital or analog, or even maybe a control surface, so I'm pretty flexible with that. I'm probably just going to use the included preamp, as large standalone preamps seem to get expensive fast.

Oh, and since I'm using a DAW, I'd probably need a DAC or a mixer with a built in one, that can preferably stream many channels at once.

Seeing that effects are a lot more easily (and cheaply) gotten using a DAW and stuff, I'd like to use SONIC or Cubase or a similar software (I've had some limited experience with these too).

So basically, right now, I'm thinking of:
1. A few microphones
2. A mixer (with preamp? with firewire output?)
3. (A preamp, if the mixer doesn't include it)
4. (A DAC, if the mixer doesn't include it)
5. A DAW

(I've already got the microphones sorted out, so no real need to comment on that)

Does anyone have any suggestions for parts?

Thanks for all the help.

You forgot the most important part... A good room to record in! Start with a good room then add the other parts as needed.

You could look into something like a Digi003 if you're okay with using Pro Tools LE. It'll take care of basically everything but the mics. They make versions with and without integrated control surfaces. I haven't personally heard the preamps it comes with but in general people seem happy with digi preamps. I'm a fan of external preamps but they do get expensive quick. I'm only running a couple tracks at a time right now but when I decide to upgrade to more I'll likely pick up a 003.

1.
sm 57 $100 [guitar and snare]
3 peice samson drum kit [for toms] $100
2 AT 2020 condensor Mic's $100 each [vocals and overhangs]
audix d6 kick mic $200 [bass and kick]
_____
$600

2.
the alesis firewire mixer [16 line] is said to be an amazing mixer, and only $300 with rebate.
____
$900

3. The studio project VTB-1 is a veyr nice preamp for $110. or the focusrite preamps are great but a little pricy.

_____
$1,100

then software just get cubase for the couple hundred. get a snake, and cables and all that is liek another $400ish combined, stands whatever else, maybe $500

in the end its $1,600 about. and you'll have some professional sounding stuff. and it's great mics and products to work with.

This is the basic part of my set up i use.

also for guitar cabs, i have a sennheiser e609, which is an incredible mic, only $100 if interested. and i can use the e609 on toms too if wanted for a great sound.

and mixerwise... if you want a REALLY nice mixer for the money, i just bought a tascam fw1082. $600-$700 and it's a steal. built in pre's, comes with cubase, and is a profesisonal firewire mixer. but thats up to you and your budget...

i would also agree with that but its costly, but worth it. ive ehard the preamps and there not bad. there higher quality than basica preamps in most mixers, but nothing to shit yourself over. definately good enough though.
