What is the learning curve like for a quasi-newbie who is used to using Cubasis? I am asking because I am planning on upgrading my software on a high school budget.

all software has a learning curve. some steeper than others.
the more features , the more the learning curve.
what features are you looking for that cubasis doesnt already give you ?
you should be able to do decent songs in cubasis.

The main features I want from Home Studio is the ability to playback more than eight channels at a time. This has limited me along with the crappy built in effects.

as far as i am aware HS will do lots of tracks. if you have the computer to handle it. there are also many other options under 100 bucks including what i use. but as this is a cake forum i will refrain.just search under my name as i hate software wars and being attacked. also hitsquad.com in the software section has lots of multitrack demoes you can try before spending your money and deciding.

I've found HS to be the most user friendly of all the programs I've tried, and that includes Cubasis. There is a learning curve of course, but it's not a steep one. Once you've got it installed you should be able to start tracking right out of the box.

One of Cakewalks main strengths is its intuitiveness...things make sense, are easily accessable and quick to learn.
