I am looking at purchasing this and just had a couple of questions i am hoping someone can answer. My first is that with all this DXi stuff, do i need some sort of controller or can i just add the instruments within the software? I am an idiot when it comes to this stuff. All i want to be able to do is record my live instruments (guitar and vocals) and then add a virtual instrument part (lets say piano). Will home studio 2004 xl do this for me? also, would the non-XL version do this for me. Any info. is greatly appreciated...thanks

Hey Scoot82,
If you are using a non-Creative soundcard you will need some sort of software synthesiser to produce MIDI sounds.

You can achieve this by inserting a DXi into HomeStudio, it will then enable you to hear your MIDI tracks. You can control the MIDI by means of a sequenced track, that is, compose the track yourself in Piano Roll View. You can also make use of a MIDI keyboard to play the sounds in real-time. Depending on which DXi you are using it will play pre-programmed sounds (Edirol Virtual Sound Canvas) or you can load SoundFonts into it (Dyad DXi).

For the second question, yes both versions will do what you want. However if you want more realistic MIDI sounds than VSC can produce, you will definitely need a good soundfont player.

HS2004 includes VSC, whereas HS2004XL includes VSC and Dyad amongst other goodies.
