I just bought my first MAC computer with the hopes of starting to create some music at home. I am looking to record some stuff with my acoustic and electric guitars and maybe if I am feeling daring some vocals. Right now all I have is the computer with the garage band software, and of course the guitars.

My question is, what else do I need to start recording. Just the basics are fine for now. If all goes well I will continue my education later with some more advanced equipment.

Does the mac have an in built mic? There's a Newbies forum where they'll give ya a very general answer, it might be good to get an idea of what you need.

First off, immediately get a good beginner recording book (spend $20 before spending hundred$/thousand$) that shows you what you need to get started and how to hook everything up in your studio:
Home Recording for Musicians by Jeff Strong - $15
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/07...ce&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance
(Wish I'd had that when I started; would have saved me lots of money and time and grief)

Good Newbie guide that also explains all the basics:

Besides GarageBand (an incredibly good program, especially for the price):
Audacity: http//audacity.sourceforge.net
FREE

I loaned my copy to a friend who never returned it.
That's not a bad thing though--it gave me an excuse to buy the second edition.
Do not buy the book titled The Everything Home Recording Book--it's not as good as Strong's book.

to get started on a low-end budget if your computer does not already have a mic get a MXL desktop recording Kit.

I would recommend a good audio interface.
With a MAC you can't go wrong with Motu.
Either a 8 Pre or maybe the 828MKII or the
new 828MKIII.
My 828 came bundled with Digital Performer
which only runs on the MAC.
Other than that a couple decent mics and
some monitors and you should be good to go.
