Meh...
Hey all,

Typical premise. Guy in band(s) always paying studios to record now trying to record himself in home studio.

Here's a track I just completed today for my one-man-band Decenter. The track is called "Optimist".

Here's a link to the track: Optimist

I'm really interested in getting feedback on this track and would also be more than happy to share the techniques I used if anyone likes it enough to care.

Thanks,
Garry

Nice idea for the song, but vocal should be more intimate and closer in that kind of song.
Electric guitar which is starting later is too loud to the rest of the instruments.
Also drums sounds...pretty bad ;-)
But I like the song!

Thanks for the feedback Conr4d. I'll try dialing back the effects on the vox and bring them forward a bit. The crushing guitars on the second half was more a stylistic choice a la Hum, Failure, Helmet, etc. As far as the drums go. I'm trhng to make do with what I have (Session Drummer). I don't have the room for a real kit or the cash for Drumagog - any suggestions?

If this is legit, then don't have much in the way of complaints for this song.

Honestly, it was so good that I seriously doubted you were a "home recording n00b". It's actually pretty good, tbh. The mix is nice and warm -- love the guitar tones, vocals were done nicely. But I agree, in some parts, the vocals are a bit covered up by guitars.

Thanks Austin. Not sure what you mean by legit or not... It's definitely my material that I recorded on my Dell laptop. I'm definitely new to home recording but I'm hoping to learn some good tricks and techniques here. I know the sounds I want and I can hear the final product, I just need to figure out how to get there.

At first I thought you were an alias, and someone was just joking around, solely because I really thought your song sounds good! I'm not doubting the originality of it.

Keep it up!

This sounds pretty good...not really noobish at all.

I was waiting for more guitars to come in and it was pretty satisfying when they finally did, although the extra guitars seemed too dark and too loud compared to everything else. It got a bit jumbled there towards the end.

The drums were just so passive that it was disappointing...the main guitar parts and the sound of the vocalist made me think this tune would be better with a more agressive ryhthm section. This kind of sounded like a mellow drum machine pattern tapping along...maybe not that bad, but it could be so much better.

I like the idea of this tune...I just wish it rocked out a bit more and sooner.

Hi DogmaticVox! I'm amazed! :) This is good shit! I'm actually enjoying your song and listening to it over and over. Do you have a myspace site or anything? I'd like to add you

Mate nice song but the vocals need to sound out they are coverd in the guitars.you could bring them out a little if you know what i mean.

Good song. There's some nice guitar tone in there trying to get out. There's quite a bit of mud around, you could try rolling the lows off the guitars. Vocals need to be lifted up too. Overall impression of the mix is that it's messy and kind of indistinct at the moment

Thanks for the words everyone! I appreciate you giving it a listen.

I think I'll try and EQ the guitars a little more to brighten them up a bit and maybe bump up the vox a little.
