Home made portable amp and destortion plans

Ok here it goes this is going to be long :D
i have three questions in mind:

1)I am trying to make a portable amplifier based on the LM386 chip but im not sure how to do it, I also want distortion effect and tone control (if you can define how tone is affected with the different components please do). do i REALLY have to use a chip besides the LM386?
*edit: I want distortion(overdrive) only in certain occasions only, but i also love CLEAR non distorted sound how can i achieve this with the LM386?*

2) anyone have good schematics

3) What is the difference between tone control and an EQ

it's a slow thread becuase no-one wants to school you evidently... you obviously dont have the skill set to pull this off as you are... so you'll need to get some edumacation... what level of ed do you have at present??? any chance of taking a basics electronics class at the local jr college???
