Hey My Name is Matt Gio,

My band and I are soon looking at cutting an EP on my home basic/descent home set-up. What I intended to do was to do the drum tracks in a proffesional studio but all the guitars and vocals at home so we can spend as much time as needed on them.
I run a P3 800MHz with a SB platinum with a Live drive II as my sound card. It also has dual monitor, surround sound speakers and 192 meg of RAM. I use Cool Edit because basically I know how too and don't really see the point of learning nething else and more complicated. If anyone has a reason I'm more than happy to hear it.

I'm wondering what kind of mics and extra equiptment (ie. Mixing desk, effect racks etc) i need to hire/buy to pull this recording off nicely enough to release on CD in stores, keeping in mind the kit will either be done in the studio or on a V-Drum.

If anyone could help us out that'd be great :0

Thanks alot,
Matt

I don't know why you'd need a mixer because you'd probably mix everything within CoolEdit, right?
So, I think you'll only need a nice preamp for your vocal and guitar mics. Especially if you're only going to lay down one track at a time. Personally, I think you should upgrade your sound card to a pro model if this is going to be for commercial release. Also, if you're going to do the mixing, it wouldn't be a bad idea to look into some reference monitors.
You didn't mention what mics you had ... but IMHO a Shure SM57 and a AT4030 should do nicely for guitars and vox.
Good luck on your project!

cheers and...

Thanks for your input.
yea, i wasn't sure if the SB LIVE Plat. would be descent enough. What sound card would u recommend i take a look at. I been looking at the hoontech upgrades and cards.
About the mixing desk... wouldn't i need it to set treb, mid and bass's etc or can u do that with a pre-amp. What kinda preamp do i need?
I only done this stuff before with cheap mics and a dodgie mini-mixer.
Well, i have done it with a huge macki 1604 and i duno wat kinda mics but i was doing it all by trial and error.

Thanks...

stuff.

yes you will definitely want a new soundcard... i have to advise looking at the delta 44. i have a 1010 and its converters are great!

Welcome Chubs

Hi mate - yes the Delta 44 is what I'm looking at for my home setup. 24/96 4 in/4 out, the Delta 66 has 4 in 6 out and spdif as well. Turramurra Music have the 44 for around $750.

cheers
John

kewl

ok,
thanks I'll look at the delta 44 however i don't understand wat the difference between using the 1/4 inch input on the live drive II and the Delta 44 is?

so can someone give me a rough idea of how it all plugs in..
I.E.

Guitar into preamp, preamp into (?)input??

like if u got the time, in a bit more detail than that?

Thanks.
