i am looking to build a computer based studio, just a small one for recording songs by myself or demoes with my band. here is what i am considering getting for hardware:
digimax Lt mic-preamp interface into either an aardvark direct pro Q10, echo layla, or motu 828 into my compuer, then feeding into a pair of event ps-8 monitors. i will have various mikes as well. i was just wondering is this would be a sufficient set up. thanks.

What programs are you going to use for your recording, tracking, and editing?

well, as for my comp, i am not sure of the specs yet, as i am having a mac custom built for me. for software, i am going to be using pro trools most likely.

That setup sounds great to me. Can Pro Tools use Waves plug-ins? (In other words, can it run DirectX or VST plugs), because, if it can't you may want to look into using different software. Those Waves plugs are amazing.

I thought the TDM plugs were the ones you used with the Farm cards and what not. I thought the Digi 001 used a different type of plug. (I guess this shows how much I've worked with Pro Tools.)

The Digi 001 doesn't really have any bearing on the types of plugs you can use. Pro Tools LE (which is what you use with the 001) supports AudioSuite and RTAS plugs. TDM plugs are the ones that have dedicated cards.

So then, can you use DirectX or VST plugs with ProTools LE? If not, he might want to look into using Cubase or something. Those Waves plug-ins (well, I only have experience with the renaissance bundle) are well worth it. Unless you're already used to ProTools, and would never consider changing.

you can't use vst or direct x plugins with PT. go with Nuendo. if you work with midi go with Cubase or Logic 5

well, i think that i am going to definetley stick with pro tools, mainley because i am going to school for sound engineering and they have a pro tools set up. as for plug ins, i saw in musicians friend that they have plug-ins specifically for pro tools, so that is most likely what i will get. but overall, this set up seems like it will work fine for my purposes.

So, does Nuendo not have good midi support? I thought nuendo was basically Cubase Plus.

Nuendo is targetted more torwards audio only. Keyboard magazine reviewed it in the April '02 issue. It lacks alot of MIDI features found in Cubase.
