Man, I love it when lightning strikes!!

My good friend Dawnmarie (www.mp3.com/dawnmarie) is over tonight and we're collabing on a new song. She calls it Why Can't You See? (for now, anyway)

Anyhow, it started as straight 16 beat danceable pop until I got my mysterious Jazz mitts on it...

I just finished the backup track for her to take home to practice, she'll be coming back to do the vox at a later date...

But man, you GOTTA hear this backup track!!! It's about 4: minutes of danceable pop bookended by about 2 minutes of mysterious coolness.

Check 'er out, lemme know what you think! The drums are my DR-660 drum computer, the synth stuff is Triton 61, the bass is my RD-500 fretless patch (yeah, yeah, I know, play the REAL one...) and the guitar is my Strat.

(160kb encoding)

Thanks!!

Well, I was excited, what can I say.. :D

Now tat I've slpet on it, there' s lot that will be chaning.. I'm gonna try a "real" bass part, and I may tweak the drums a bit. Hell, I may doe a ground up re-record. But, I had a ton of fun... :D

now your talking. that's what i wanna hear.

Very competant sequencing ! Definately has a good groove. It really hard to catch peoples attention with synth based music since often the sounds are so familiar... after being used in so many comercials and cheap film tracks. Any original samples or peculiar musical ideas you can throw in will help... even one or 2 live instruments will really help.. the voice will improve it a lot.

Actually I thought the last section at the end was really cool - the best bit ... even though it's simple it sounds different if you know what I mean.

Glad you enjoy it... very important.

Cheers

Thanks guys!

Dres, the only part that is sequenced is the drums; everything else is played in realtime. I haven't the slightest idea how to sequence on my Triton. That embarrasses me... :)

I kinda had Metheny's As Falls Wichita album in the back of my mind when that ending spilled out, it was quite by accident.. :)

You play like a metronome ! .. had me fooled... you hear the synth sounds and you just assume sequencing.... no offence. BTW I reckon you should take the end of this song and make it the start of a new one.

Oh, no offense taken, I actually take that as a compliment, because as a drummer, my meter is a challenge. For some reason, it's not as much a challenge when I'm playing other instruments.

Yeah, it'd be nice to make that ending a beginning of something else, but it's not my material; I am but the arranger/producer/performer in this case. The sone belongs to my friend Dawnmarie, and what she sez, goes, but I'll pass that along because she is very open minded about that sort of thing...

L.L...

:o <--- a yawn for being up so late...
 <--- the look on my face the first 13 seconds of your song

Wow... lots & lots of Miami Sound Machine peeps here ;) has that Coo-bahn-o flavor...

The percussion sounds really set it off... the synths are all really ... "synthy", but that stuff brings it alive...

Hmmm.... long intro? Is a voice coming? At 2:47...

The changes are very flavorful... I'm just wondering if it's all riffing, or if there is a change/lyric anywhere... waiting for Gloria Estefan here... :)

Hm... thought Dawn was a singer? What did she play, if not her throat? :)

As always, very musical L.L...

Dawnmarie is a singer.... You *are* up late, aren't you, you missed this part of the original post.. :D :D

I just finished the backup track for her to take home to practice, she'll be coming back to do the vox at a later date...

This would be the "karaoke version", I guess. :)

Nice job on that percussion stuff! The whole rhythm track does a really nice job of driving the song. Tasty!

Wow, Llarion, this one is really pretty special.

Mind if I play some guitar over it?

AlChuck...

Hey, knock yourself out! Unfortunately, there's not a lot of room in there, because there's no solo section per se (Dawnmarie liks to vocally noodle over the empty spaces, and everything on this one is ultimately her call), but if you come up with something cool and sublime (Think late 70s-early 80s Metheny), I'll certainly run it by her.. :D :D
