In 2001 or so I bought a Sennheiser e602 to use mainly as a kick drum mic. I did plenty of recordings with it, but whenever I compared it to a Shure Beta 52 I realized I liked the Shure a lot better. I've been using a borrowed one of those for a while now, and the Sennheiser has been sitting in its box. However, today I got it out again to mess around with it. I still don't like it that much on kick drum, but I aimed it at a floor tom, and whoa! This is just what the doctor ordered--it gives me the 'boom' sound that I get when I use an LD condenser, but without the extra bleed from the ride. I was blown away by the roundness of the low end of the drum's tone. A recording with this mic would really make some subwoofers rumble on floor tom parts. It beats the crap out of the MD421 on floor toms. Looks like the e602 will be seeing more use from now on.

I've been useing a 602 on my floor tom for over a year now. Does the job for me!

I don't have the recordings handy because they are at my rehearsal space. Next time I go, I will make sure to put them on a disc and bring them back home so I can post them. I need to check them on my monitors I use at home anyway.

i have tried the 602 on floor tom on occasion but in my experience i can be too boomy and a little too dark in the mids. i guess it depends alot on the sound of the floor tom and the style context its being used it.

but you are definately right about the characteristics. very low and round that resonates through the sub frequencies and gives the floor tom a huge sound. ive just felt its usually a bit much on most things.

i do personally like it on kick though too.

danny

I finally got around to getting those files, so here's a clip:

Note: I am a terrible drummer even when I'm in practice, and I'm waaaaay out of practice, so please excuse the playing. When you hear me say 'dammit' in the beginning that's because one of the kick beaters kept getting caught up in my pant leg.

Anyway, mics on this are MXL603s overhead, spaced wide apart and angled towards the center of the kit; MD421 on kick; and e602 on the bigger of the two floor toms (the 18 incher). Nothing on snare or any of the other toms. I ran into my Tascam M320 board and from there into a Delta 66.

I like it on Low tom.
I wonder how it would sound on ALL the toms.
Side address is nice.

And these are the "E" versions .. . the silver faced ones?
Not the more expensive black 602s?

Interesting.

I think you might be thinking of the e609. The e602 is front-address and I don't think there is a silver version of that one. I have the black e609 too but I've never tried it on toms.

Whoop,
You are right, I was thinking of the E609... oops.

I guess I need to look into the 602.
Thanks!

I don't like the sound of the floor tom at all but the ride... wow... What cymbal/mic did you use?

You do realise that you're asking a question about a 3 year old post?

Honest noob mistake.
Most of those people haven't posted here in a long time.
But it's nice to see the new guys reading the posts and learning good stuff! And commenting on what they comprehend. ;)
