Hobbit Turds and Jive-Flies

Bring up the guitar a taste relative to all that frenetic percussion in the opening. I'm wondering if you put more noticeable space on the vocal what it would sound like - something closer to what the drum kit's got. Also, I'd like to be able to make out the lyrics more easily. Doable? (But you like the vocal to blend in with the mix, right?)

Hobbit Turds is some wonderful shit. Honest. The song's great, but that percussion just takes it to another level. And then the outro takes it to yet another place. Magic.

I did end up bumping the intro guits a hair... What do you mean by "more noticeable space" on the vocals? Verb? Panning configuration? As far as the lyric comprehensibility, I don't sit there with a calculator or anything but usually 70-80% of the words being understandable sounds about right to me. I think there should be a little mystery with that stuff....leave room for individual interpretations I guess. Vocs here has a couple pitchy spots but I think level-wise the first verse is where I want it.... The second verse has some issues with the delay. I might try taking the delay off and running an additional track with just delay feedback. Thanks for listening though dobro. Glad it (mostly) came through for you!

Sounds good through my laptop speakers!

Thanks man!

Verb and delay - anything that puts dry tracks somewhere on the scale from 'less dry' to 'dripping with verb'.

Well besides the rhythmic delay in the second verse, I've got a stereo delay on each vocal (short <30ms settings as a thickener), and some plate verb...thing is every time I noticed a conspicuous verb tail I dropped the blend ratio a little. Maybe too much?

Dunno. It's the first thing I'd try if I was working the mix though. Which I ain't. :)

This song got weirder than I expected fast!

The percussion right at the beginning seemed kinda messy and hard to follow. Otherwise, it sounded pretty good to me.

I listened last night and again now...I'm really impressed. It all sounds so complex and the dark melodies just keep coming...really strange intervals all over the place.

Would you ever consider just rocking out a 3 minute simple tune? I love your sounds, but this is almost too complicated for me. Suddenly I'm like unfrozen caveman lawyer or something...

Oooh...that's nice at 4:07 where it opens up a little bit with the clean guitars...

I think there's something that could be done to the vocals to get them to sit better, but I can't put my finger on it. You always seem to have a similar dry-ish doubled vocal sound, so maybe that's just your MO. Do you ever try leaving just one lead vocal track?

Anyway - great job on this dude. I read earlier in another thread that you have an album/CD/downloadable collection or something out? Tell me more!...link please!!

Yeah Steve I know what you mean, though I was kinda shooting for a sort of haphazard cacophony in the intro. I'll have to listen with more critical ears after I put it down for a bit. Thanks for the comments!

Hey Pete! Oooo...too complicated... that's not good. I kinda thought this was a shortish poppy tune. And I changed the vocals (I thought) significantly today after reading the thread on Spot Vocal Delay. I changed some of the plug-in settings and am pretty happy with how the vocals are sitting now (which admittedly isn't saying much for me). I'd love to have just one lead vocal track but I just don't have the voice for it. Little pitchy things happen for split-seconds that I just can't control... sometimes a few times in a single line of lyrics. And I just can't stand my voice, but I can deal with how it sounds doubled. But thanks for listening and the other kind words.

But complicated? Don't you like Phish? I was listening to Junta recently and they are like a bijillion times more complicated than my stuff. But I guess also more fun/less navelgazey. I never quite got this fun thing that everyone's so crazy about. Oh well, I is who I is. :o Check yo PMs mofo. And thanks for checking in!

I think it's a pretty good mix overall. Especially for all the stuff going on. I'd like the vocals to sit better and be less monotone, but they are what they are. All the guitar stuff and bass sounds great. I'm not a fan of hand percussion stuff, but what you did is pretty good to me. The drums sound pretty decent. I'd like more thump from the kick. It's a little plain and boxy. Some of your kick work is a little messy. Not that I'm a great drummer or anything, but some of your doubles and timing at the end there are little flimsy. Pretty big song though. Nice job.

i like the drum sounds. cool low register harmonies too. nice sprinkling of sound effects. electric guitar sounds real nice too. the song brings yes to mind. i don't get the cover aspect though.

Hey thanks 'slick. Yes?? Yes as in THE Yes??? Shining-flying-purple-wolfhounds-Yes???? Isn't their stuff all modulated and in weird 11/16 time sigs? I like 4 or 5 of their songs but Jon Anderson's voice gives me the willies. I was shooting more for The Smiths meets Acid Mothers Temple, but I feel like I fell short of the chicken-voiced tunesmithing of one and the expansive sensibilities of the other and just ended up sounding like me  (though I maybe nailed the chicken voice). The cover thing was a reference to the thread title being a play on the words 'Harvesters and Drive-Bys'. There have been so many threads here with that title lately, I thought it would be funny if it was a continuing trend. But this song is not called Harvesters and Drive-Bys....not even vaguely related, so I felt I had to change the thread title to somehow be different but still make reference to that fabulous aforementioned tradition. Also, my reliance on cheap thread-titling tactics to draw increase my appeal here came into play a little. It generally doesn't work, but sincerity never worked for me either, so it's a wash as far as I'm concerned. Get it now? :)

Finall had chance to hear fleet. Hair Vests, Flares & Wide Ties was a really cool listen. I know you're a massive Incredible String Band fan and it's the first time I've really heard that influence come through. I can't really warm to them, but I did enjoy this.

As ever there's tons of layers and interesting things going on - I need a few more spins to let them sink in. The drum sound is great and distinctive as ever - I think I could pretty much pick out your drums in blind tests now.

In terms of critique, the bass sounded a little overbearing in the mix to me. I know we've had this conversation a few times though and nobody else has picked up on it so there may be something in my listening environment. Not sure why it's always your tunes though? The only other thing I thought was that the arpeggiated guitar part sounded a little thin. Did you cut the eq to fit in the mix? I'd love that picking to sound a bit fuller if possible.

I'll be listening to this a few more times yet man :thumbs up:

got it, thanks. yes i meant the yes yes.

I like it alot. The main vocal is actually a little too far forward for my taste.
I liked the helterskelter intro.
I enjoyed listening through the caramel to find the cream and the sugar.
The mix is a little "dark" much it works for me.
Nice stuff.

As flattering as the ISB comparison is, I never would have expected it with this. But thanks Rob, I'm thrilled you got a chance to hear and comment!

Ah, you probably recognize my one fill...

Ok, I've been starting to think I might be mixing the bass a little loud lately and I did bring it down, along with some other changes (see below). I've also noticed the picked guitar thing but only on certain systems. I did some mild eq-ing to it, but probably didn't change it much. I noticed it doesn't sound as thin when the tracks are soloed, so it could be the mids from the rest of the song clomping all over it, or too much center cone in tracking. Thanks again!

Hey Ray, thanks! I agreed with you about all the vocals and pulled them back a bit. Thanks for the listen and feedback.

Ok. With feedback I've received here in mind, I went through on a ruthless hack-and-slash mission yesterday and cut a lot of stuff. Pulled the bass back and eq-ed it, pulled back the overheads, some cuts on the kick, lower vocals, lower guitar, and some eq work on the double tracked aluminum wok lid. To my ears there was noticeable improvement, but I could be losing objectivity at this point. I may have to put this down soon, or start retracking parts.

The aggression in the bass sounds great now.
I really like the vocal level now.
Tres bonn dude!

Cheers Ray, I'm psyched it was noticeable to someone other than me! Also forgot to mention I slapped some delay on the lead vocal.
