Laptops are not the way to go if you want to record and stuff some nice cards in it. Just because you can't put it in... Even if you just want to hook it up as a sequencer, it might get you some trouble to find a MIDI-thingy that fits in.

Also, most laptops use relatively slow 5400rpm drives (at least last time I checked).

There are a few USB options but as you rule out PCI cards, you're very limited and the price is higher. Also, as you probably know, a high performance laptop costs three time as much as the same (or better) power in a staitonary computer.

Laptop recording can be done but considering the limited options in especially audio interfaces and the lower performace, I don't think it's worth it. I think you're be better off buying a cheaper laptop (if you really need a laptop) and a stationary computer for recording.

I'm not an apple guy...

But it seems like it may be technically possible if mony is not object ($10k or so). Get one of those new G4 laptops, and stick a bunch of firewire stuff on it.

There is an audio interface from MOTU, and Glyph makes speedy drives.

It should work, but as I said, will NOT be cheap.

Oh, I didn't know that money wasn't an object. Check with NASA - I'm sure they have some laptops that will do the trick.
