Around here an ounce of KB is about $200 and an 8ball (3.5grams?) of great blow is about $120. Back in the day we were spending $80 for an 1/8th and $300 for an 8Ball.

In LA in the late 80's they were just starting the 'Pay to Play' scam where bands have to buy tickets to their own show for a few bucks each and then try to resell them before the gig to make a profit. When you were from out of town it was next to impossible to make any money. We got scammed by the Roxy and they put us on after the headliner on a Thursday night. By the time we were on stage the place was empty. I think the janitor was even starting to sweep up.

Another fun interplay is between the band and the soundman during shows. The singer always wants a little more then a little less then a bit more reverb then a little less backup vocals then a bit less reverb. If they piss you off enough you just stop changing anything and wait for them to say 'okay there that's perfect'.
 
What would be a decent (on the low end) payment for a band playing a bar? Guys just starting out. Also, how hard was it to get cassettes duped if they made demos using a Portastudio?
 
Hi bj shea, this is a real interesting thread you have going here. I've been a musician playing out since I was fifteen, started out at the local bars on the Sunset Strip, in LA, just to give you a hint I was born in '49, so I have been around for awhile. This question about how much bands make really hits a sore spot with me (not you) it's just thst bands have been making $50 per player a night for so long that it's ridiculous, I'm talking about your average weekend band. Most young players are so hyped up about playing they'll do it for free, like lug a 400 pound Hammond B3 up three flights of stars to play for a sold out audience of five people. ha Drugs, o'yes I've known a few, back in the 60's $10 an ounce for preemo, whitecross, halucenagenics and lots of alcohol. Went on tour in 70' in a bus came out of a fog in '74 wow. Drank Bud with Alice Cooper, hash with Jim dandy, Bob Seeger, James Gang, and more I'm lucky I'm still alive, put in your book the dangers of band life, it'll kill ya in more ways than one. I've got two ol' 331/3 rpm's from my band and 3 45's that's all that's left. Also our band hooked up with a bike club and started playing at their clubgrounds, very interesting times. By 89' I was downsouth jukin' and now...well my wife and I have a music ministry and play music for God. So after these guys recorded on a TASCAM portastudio, what are some things that would happen when the tape was being mixed?

Everybody wants to hear more of themselves. They all wish it had been done on 2" analog or those new ADATS that are CD quality and have no tape hiss.

They finally get a mix they agree on and send it off for mastering and duplication. When it gets back everyone wants to know why their parts were turned down because it didn't sound like that when they were mixing.
