why do you need hiss removal?! Unless you are doing restoration work or something? If you are recording and you need hiss removal, you're doin it wrong.
I think some of those hiss removal plugs probably just roll off the high frequencies to make it less obvious. I don't know if you can ever really remove it completely because it is more than just high frequencies.
Jeff_D has a point...the best offense is a good defense. Hiss usually comes from having a gain level set too high or too low somewhere in the recording path.
At least cubase studio 5 does not include one. And though there are hiss removal plugins that take the hiss away well (audacity has one too), they can't take only the hiss away. It will always change the sound otherwise too, more or less.
Compression makes the louder parts quieter. So the "non-hiss" gets turned down while the hiss remains untouched. When you turn the track up through either make-up gain or a fader move, the hiss is much louder relative to the peaks.
You need either less compression or better gain staging when recording if hiss is a problem.
