Recently when I removed the hiss from audio tape to wav, I have a random bell like tone that is really loud. Has anyone experienced this, and how do I stop it?

I assume you used the "Hiss Removal" function?

That function isn't the best for the task... I'd personally recommend using the noise reduction feature.

Highlight an area of the hiss, and open the function, select "Get profile from selection" and set the meter to about 95%. Close the function, then highlight the entire track, open Noise Reduction again, and hit Ok. It won't eliminate 100% of the hiss, but it will take it down to an inaudible state. Enough for you to work with.

Do you have any idea why those strange bell tones were inserted?

Proabaly digital artifacts created by the hiss removal program.

When using DAW's for editing, the more you strip or add to a file, the more "digitized" it becomes. The level of Hiss Removal you used seems to have left what's commonly referred to as "digital bubbles" on your wav file. It's no where near as efficient as one would like... :(

Sounds more like the tones inserted in evaluation copies of Syntrillum products - and/or in evaluation extension modules such as were provided for Cool Edit 2000.

Ozpeter,

I didn't understand the implication of your post. Was it that versions newer than CE 2.0 do not have this artifact problem with the noise reduction/hiss removal function?

My non technical mind can see how this problem could be perhaps improved upon but it seems that anytime the original digital information is manipulated there are bound to be repercussions. It's a trade-off that the ear must decide and it's really important to isolate the actual offending noise (noise reduction clipboard function).

I have friends that work in pro studios that scoff at using noise reduction but in a home environment I find it necessary....just be carefull and save your original file at all times so you can call "overs".

I don't think we're talking about the random beeps inserted in evaluation copies. We're talking about what happens when you use hiss or noise removal on really extreme settings. Sounds just like digital bells.

And it's constant, not every 10 seconds or so.

Anyway, the first time I tried to use noise reduction, I was confused and highlighted the whole file (not just a spot with 'silence' on it), and if you noise reduce the entire file, lol...well, if you haven't tried it, you should...digital bubbles/bells, and that's all there is...it's almost a soothing synthlike sound, lol..but NOT what I was looking for.

Anyway, to the original poster...was your music REPLACED by the digital sounds of noise reduction, or is it just audible within the music?

OK, maybe I was wrong (again!) - half the problem is trying to describe sounds in words.

In general when using noise reduction, don't push your luck - the standard setting of -40dB is way too high for most situations. Try 10 or 15, and have the slider thingy at about 70 to 80 maybe.

If you are trying to remove only a faint noise you can go further. If it's a loud noise, not as far - which is of course the converse of what you really want!

Voodoo's first law of noise reduction says, "remove it at source" of course - but that's not always possible.

naw, you're probably right...I re-read the post. "Random" and "tone" and "really loud" sounds more like the evaluation copy thing. The only thing that throws me off is the fact that Bonnie says it happens with the noise/hiss reduction.

Oh well...maybe we'll hear back some day, lol.

bells and chimes too

I am using Cool Edit 2000 with the extra Noise Reduction filters, purchased as an add-on. I notice the bell-like, chime-like sounds on using both the hiss reduction filter and the click-pop filter. I don't get these artifacts if I process relatively small portions of the the file, one at time (around 2 MB), but do if I try to process larger portions. I am trying to clean up old LPs, and my files run about 100-200 MB at 32 bits.

I purchased and registered both Cool Edit 2000 and the add-on Noise Reduction Package, but when I bring up the dialog boxes for both hiss reduction and click-pop, they are labeled *DEMO*. Could this have something to do with it? Thanks. Mote

It was the DEMO thing

Oops, I had not installed the Noise Reduction plug-in with a seperate serial number -- used the serial number that came with Cool Edit 2000. Now that the plug in is correctly installed with its own SN, the *DEMO* sign is gone and so is the bell sound. Amazing how well thinks work when you follow the directions. Thanks. Mote :)

Favourite saying of mine - "When all else fails, read the manual". And I admit to tending to work that way!
