The Way It Moves
My bassist's amp is buzzing when we record through the DI out on the back of his amp. I'm considering just mic'ing it up, but what I'm wondering is what is causing the buzz? Is it something with grounding?

No ground lift available on his amp. I remember we were playing at a gig once and the guy plugged the amp into this power converter thingymabob and it fixed the problem? Something that had to do with that third pin on the power plug?

Probably a ground lift.

I've rarely heard any amp DI's that sound very good. Use an external DI and also mic the cab for best results.

Probably a ground loop. The amp is being grounded both by its own ground wire on the amp's power cable and by the ground connection of the amp's DI output, which is grounded through the preamp.

Get a 1:1 isolation transformer to run between the DI out and the preamp.
