I am new to the forum, so this might have been covered, but I would like to know how to get that nice stereo vocal I hear on Hip Hop tracks so often. It almost sounds like no effects are used, but I know from listening that a chorus/detune type delay is being used. I also know that the same effect isn't used all the time, but I am hearing a real similar sound on a lot of new records. In headphones, it almost sounds like two vocals panned hard. I have gotten something similar before with a good stereo chorus, but it's just not quite as nice as pro records. Do you think they are recording two tracks? Gimme some info if you have knowledge.

Yes

Yes when I hit the studio, the engineer usually has me overdub parts of the vocals, mostly on the chorus. Doubling up will make that hard panning sound on both sides you are talking about. Sometimes there will be effects, sometimes there won't be. Depends on many things; its up to the engineer as to what effects are needed.

aa, so sometimes what I am hearing is a VERY closely tracked doubled vocal? How do you keep it from sounding the 'same'. If you know what I mean, sometimes I double a vocalist and you can barely hear that they are different tracks. What are some effects or techniques used to get nice separation?

If u are using software anywhere in your mixing, there is a WIKKED directX plugin called "hyperprism Quasi-Stereo" this will get a huge stereo sound, even on a mono vocal. another method is double or even triple your vocals, one loud front and centre, 2 more quieter and panned hard left.right. another way is to put a very short reverb on the vocals, this will thicken them up.
hope that helps

Im workn on my overdubs and adlibs also.
I was wondering if anyone knows the effect Lil Rob is using in this song. It doesnt sound like he has overdubed the main vocal twice, just sounds like it has a chorus effect added.
He does come in at parts with an overdub, but i am refering to the majority of his flow.
Lil Rob's - Bring out the Freak in You - Uploaded by me Into Rapidshare

Wanna hear someone from tightbeatz.com that is unbeleivable on the overdubs.

Hes gonna give me some pointers.
Ill let yall know what he said.

You can take a nice vocal take, or a doubled take then pan em left right then put an EQ on each seperate track and dip EQ out of each track at differnt spots.. this gives identical takes slightly different characteristics and will make for a thick wide vocal sound

for how i record i usually rap my verse twice over and pan one 30% to the left speaker and one 30% to the right speaker and do my adlib and leave that in the center. probably the best advice i can give you for how to know what to adlib would be just to close your eyes and just vibe the hell outta the beat. when im recording i just get really into the music and i may look dumb standin there bobbin my head and movin around wildly with my eyes closed but i know thats its gonna turn out right in the end and thats all that matters, just get lost in the music and your mind will catch the rythm and know what to say and when. ive seen alot of people come in the studio for the first time and be so worried about tryin to look gangsta in front of there friends that they freeze up and are to worried about tryin not to look stupid when they should be concentrating on the music. its not a competition to be the hardest, its music. and thats what alot of rappers today forget.

This is what my boy 2Tone said he be doin yall.
