I've been doing this for a minute and trust me get a manager. Somebody that has good business sense and can talk sh*t. This is not to dis your skills but you have one huge strike against you; you're emotionally attached to your music. Labels don't want to talk business to an artist, they just don't.

Don't waste your time sending demo tapes, I've seen the treatment they get first hand. A&Rs don't want to be liable for stealing other people's work so most don't even listen to them.

They best way to break into the business is by networking. Meet people, let them hear your sh*t, collaborate with local artists, use the internet, whateva. There's no easy answer but doing it alone would be your first mistake.

Last but not least, learn the business. It might make you think twice about getting signed by a major label.

TAH, you should listen to what Metronome is telling you. It's good, solid advice.

THAT is the "straight up" TRUTH!

Don't waste your time sending demo tapes

They won't listen to them. It'll probably go in the garbage. :( You are better of using an inside source/contat or an established artist on that label, an affiliated label, or an opposing label.

There is no way around that FACT.
You have to network your ASS off.
It's all about who you know, but even more important it's about who knows YOU.
Example... It's like me saying "Yeah, I know Michael Jordan, I did a couple of parties for him...". But if I see him in public, and he doesn't say "What's up Spin." or if he doesn't even remember me... I could say I know HIM, all I want..., but if he doesn't know me, then what's the point? And how and why would he help me?
Now let's say that I didn't know Jordan, but I wanted to do a party for him. I send him some CD's, he doesn't listen to them, a get his phone #, he doesn't return the calls, blah, blah, blah... But if I know Scottie Pippen, he could tell Jordan that "Yo. Spin's the man when it comes to DJ's. You should use him for your private parties..."
(just a small assimilation :) )
It's all about who knows YOU. You have got to do your networking (read---bullshitting). If it 's not your forte, then you need to get an agent, publicist, or better yet a manager.

Last but not least, learn the business. It might make you think twice about getting signed by a major label.

Learn it inside out. It will save you from losing a LOT of money.
Plus, you'll learn that you could make you aspirations come into reality, without using a major record label.
If you go "ghetto gold" you could make 2 to 4 million $'s. Seriously.
But in order for you to go "ghetto gold" your music is going to have cross the "line" because you probably won't sell more than 300,000 to your core audience.

peace...

p.s. Sorry about the rambling.
