Hi, I’m looking to purchase some new monitors mainly for hip hop and r&b production. I know monitors are all about preference, but I still wouldn’t mind knowing what your guys are working with. I went to my local store yesterday and heard a variety of monitors, but they didn’t store some of the quality models and brands. Ive broken my list down to the following

KRK V8 SERIES 2

Mackie HR824

Blue Sky SYSTEM ONE 2.1

EVENT ASP8

Dynaudio BM5A

If you had a choice which would you purchase ?Have you had any experience with the above, good or bad?

thanks

only ones on that list that i've heard are the KRK and the Events and that was at me local guitar center .... my preference was the Events but i dont really kno much about monitors and what to listen for.......

I'd probably go with the Mackies or the KRK's. I know a few people who use the 824's and they sound good. The KRK V series have always received good reviews, I've never heard the 8's but liked the 4's and 6's. But like Fyre mentioned, just give them a listen where ever you can.

JMO.. I have the wharfedale Diamnond 8.2A Pro

I heard most of the..

the Mackie is usely what everone have..and are considered to be the best by some..i think there to bass heavy

the Events to me a perfect for translating from mix to cd..just wasnt in my price range

now to me the Dyaudio BM5A were just to damn good to be true..everything is clear when played through it and is translated well from mix to cd as well..for $1000 a pair a wished i had waited to get these sometimes ...but im happy with wat i got..

havent heard ot demoed the rest..

hope this helped

Out of that list, I'd go with the Mackies.

I feel you, knotty. The Dynaudio seem too good to be true...lol.. I've only referrenced them a few times, and always in a properly treated room. So I'm not sure if they're that great, or the rooms were just precise.

I use the Behringer Truths but on the list I'd choose the KRK's V series because i have heard those before and they are def worth the price.

they are great..with a treated room they are the truth..

I have ta go for KRK... But it does depend on the which series...

Honestly I think if ou use them enough and get to know them the difference is usually negligable in similarly featured monitors. But everyone has a preference. I personally would just get at least 8" woofers. I can't rock those small shits. They just don't hit... and how can you make good hip hop when you don't hear the bass right?

just my .02

wrca- dont forget.. most or all are 8" Monitors except the Dyaudio which are 6.5'

dont know abouth the Bly Sky..dont they have a subwoofer with them?

i've been struggling to decide on a set of monitor myself. i think i liked the dynaudio the best of the ones you listed. the events second... never been a fan of the hr824 but i almost bought the hr626 until i got them in the lab and realized that that's not what i wanted to hear.they sound dope in the store but and fine in the studio but not my sound. and on the krk's i would go for the 8" samson rubicons. i liked the rubicon a whole lot on the mixing side but they lack the power and volume i'd want to have when making tracks. also the wharfdale monitors are something i've been thinking of carrying in the store but i've only heard them for a few minutes.

the best way to decide is to actually hear them though. i sell monitors to a bunch of guys just sarting and i've yet to have a guy say they hate the sound since they never really heard the differences. if you haven't had a set of monitors before then it almost doesn't matter as long as you get something that you think you can stand listening to for long periods of time. i hate my event ps8's and they kill me to listen to so i'm always eyeballing those fuckers when i'm using them. my prolem is that i used alesis monitor ones for 6 years and got to where i knew what they where telling me. now i have to learn something new if i go with anything else. doesn't matter how much i spend if i can't enjoy them and understand them for 5 years plus. and i've had plenty of cats walk in and sy these sounds better until i start explaining what they need to listen for. like "those highs do sound good because the are loud and hyped up. that will wear your ears out faster. listen to these and compare how smooth this sounds to that". you could easily buy that first set and end upo with bleeding ears for 2 years. so listening and thinking now is good because you won't really be thinking about day to day when you mixing and learning how to compensate.

said and done. myself... i hope to do a 5-1 setup early next year using yamaha hs monitors and subs. they sound cool and all but i personally wouldnt pick the hs monitors unless i had this deal going.

ohh and adam dropped a low priced model. never heard them but people say it's like taking a blanket off of sound. another guy from sweetwater loves em but suggested that they may not be that thing for hiphop though. i just wanna hear em.

thanks guys for all your replies. I went and heard the Mackies, didnt like them, they were a little to bassey.. For the price i think i can do better. The store didnt have the events or the krks, so i'll have to go somewhere else.

yeah and i agree on the 8 woofers, i need that loudness and drive. So that rules out the BM5A's.
