hip hop and cubase please help

what are some good programs to use with making beats for hip hop. I got an awesome live drumming VST called Drumkit From Hell 2, but I want to explore making techno and hip-hop beats, and would like to know what the pros use...well what the pros use that is software, I can't really afford a triton right now, I just put $1500 into building my studio thus far. are there any good vst's for this?

is reason good to use with cubase? I keep readin about it, but don't know if that is another recording program like cubase.


I have cubase sx3 (PC), running on windows XP, E-MU 1212 card, erdirol pcr-80 controller, and 1.5 gig of RAM.

Don't know heaps about hip-hop, but 2 programs that come to mind are Reason and Fruity Loops. Reason is probably the better program but is set-up like a virtual mixing studio and is harder to use. Fruity loops is very user friendly in a drag and drop kind of way. I use it to make all my drum beats and some synth sounds. I then replace the beats with live drums. Not that the fruity loops drums are bad- they are quite good, but my style of music is better with real drums.

Reason is so far the best techno production software...and really good for hip-hop purposes as well..it has tonnes of hiphop and techno drum kits that are awesome. However, the learning curve for reason is much longer than fruity loops. but personally, fruity loops is really for beginners and requires very less technical skills and well as musical. Reason is the opposite. but once u get used to reason, there is no limit of abusement of it :)
 
Well, if you've got Cubase SX and you fell comfy with it, I see no reason why you should also spend money on Reason or Floopy Roops. Just get some 808 and 909 samples, some sort of sampler (since you've got the E-mu card, look at their Emulator X), or Kontakt, and off you go.
 
Reason rewired with cubase ain't bad...

A MPC isn't bad either...

but noisewreck is right. There is really no reason for anything else. You already have a program that far exceeds the capabilities of reason, so money would be better spent on a good sampler for cubase. Kontakt is very nice but for a sampler designed for beats check out Battery or my fav, Linplug RMIV. Kontakt will do the same thing, but those progs are a little bit easier to use than a full blown sampler like Kontakt

purchase some hiphop sample cd's and get some vst instruments like hypersonic, korg legacy and etc.... u should be good...
