I will be recording a trombone duet (some Bach, some Telemann) in a small church. This is not for release but to help the performers prepare for a concert so minimal - if any - processing is preferred. They just want to hear what the audience would have heard. Mono or stereo pair some where in the audience is my current thought. I'm leaning towards mono as my stereo pair is lower quality.

Do you have any suggestions? I'm mostly wondering about microphone placement.

Microphones available:
Shure SM-57
Studio Projects B1*
MXL 2003 *
MXL 603 *
Nady SP5 (2 of these)

* requires phantom power

Preamps available:
Behringer MIC100 - can do 1 condenser
Yamaha MG10/2 (phantom power doesn't work but has 4 mic inputs)

TC Electronic M300 - for effects and A/D

Recorded to PC with Adobe Audition

thanks,
Sathyan

Looks like you don't have the pre's for a stereo pair of condensors anyway. I'd probably go with the B1, about 15-20 feet back. Play around with the distance and angle (maybe point up in the air a little) until you get a good blend of direct sound and room sound.

Yes I agree-you don't want the mics all the way out in the audience, especially in an empty church. Since the musicians want to focus on preparation for a concert, staying closer will minimize room sound. 15 feet sounds like a good compromise.

Yo Sathy....:

Don't let the 'bone" slide hit the mic.....

:D Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Green Hornet  :D
