I've developed a liking for tastily colored compressors lately,as opposed to very clean transparent ones, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any that werent $3000. I'm expecially fond, as you all know, of the Focusrite Red compressor, but I'll never buy a compressor that expensive, can't do it.
I'm going to start hunting around for the companion tube compressor that goes along with the AMR/Peavey VMP-2 to see what kind of color it imparts. Supposed to be a very nice one, right on par with the preamp, a "hidden gem" it is pften referred as.
Anyone know of any? I think occasionally you can find an La-2a around for somewhat cheap.
Peace.

I don't know about being a hidden gem, but the Alesis 3630 will definitely "color" your sound!! ;)

:D :D

Im not really a fan of the brand but.......

Check out Joe Meek...

One of my colleques has one and calls it "sort- of- like- Beatles- compression", with a nice warm suck......""

Wow, this post almost sounds dirty... *LOL*

PS... I think it was about $999 US or something like that... Not too sure..

Color me...

I've been digging the Audio Logic MT66 on snare lately. Sounds like no other compressor I've ever heard, far from transparent. Good luck trying to find one. I've also been digging the dbx 119 and 165a lately, both very aggressive. I've also been trying out an old Urei comp thing (I can't remember the model number) that sounds pretty cool on distorted guitar. It gives it a kind of tearing wet cloth sound, very sick.

Don't forget to try inserting your stompbox compressor, you can get some disgusting compression/limiting that way.

Joe Meek will give you an interesting sound if you push the compressor.

tom cram,

sorry for the off topic...

ive got a DBX 286A preamp in my rack, and even if there's no signal, it still lights up the -3db gain reduction led , even if the compressor is set off.

what's up?! is this normal?

The input detector for the meter may be on it's way out. This shouldn't affect the audio. If you want to send it in for us to repair e-mail offline w/your info and I'll assign you an RA#

Have you considered the Emperical Labs Distressor ? Just based on the reviews and word of mouth, I would try one of those first.

I have an ART Pro VLA. It's simple to use and it can compress or limit fairly transparently, and it can get extreme and colorful if you want it to. It's simple to use like most optical-electric compressors. About $450.

Opinion...

Hey Wide Awake (or anyone else),

If you had your choice between the Joe Meek 2 channel optical whatsit and your Pro VLA, which would you choose? Or, comparisons between the two if you have any. I met someone online who wants to trade some stuff and he has 1 of each that he is willing to part with. I'm familiar with how the Pro VLA sounds, I just haven't heard the Joe Meek 2 ch. unit.

And folks, I don't need the usual round of "use your ears crap," I'll be hearing them soon enough. I just want some opinions while I wait for them to ship.
