High-pitched clicking sound from guitar amp

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to follow the 'record it how you want it to sound' philosophy, so I'm toying with my guitar amp trying to get the right tone. I found I needed to turn the high end up a bit (higher than I would put it if I were playing a show, for example) or the recording would be dead in that region. The only problem is that this is creating an occasional loud clicking sound when my hand and the pick hit the strings. I imagine that sound was always there, but it's magnified by the high end boost.

I've tried getting it out with compression and EQ (which didn't work at all) and with volume envelopes (which worked very well but only half the time). Anyone have any suggestions about how I could set things up differently to prevent this sound from showing up, or what I could tweak to eradicate it in the mix?

Just for background, I'm using two sm-57s close up on the grill and near the center, going through an Aardvark Q10 into Cakewalk PA9.

Thanks, Peter

Are you using a lot of distortion? Try backing off the gain a touch.

Hey Tex,

No, I wasn't using any distortion. I had the mics right up next to the grill before. I tried backing them off about 3 or 4 inches and the sound almost completely went away without any noticeable degradation in sound quality.

Oh, and I realized what the origin of the sound was. The track I was playing is a bit rough, so I was hitting the strings harder than I usually do. One of the top strings was catching on a piece of cuticle that was detached from my middle finger nail. That's all it was.

Naturally, we must all keep our hands freshly manicured.

Peter
