Don't use the mic input... use the "Line In" on your soundcard.

yeah i am using the line input..... whats your aol or yahoo?? see i am talkinh about the output u know in the back of pre-amp it has a balanced xlr than unbalanced 1/4. well i want to us the balanced output but my sound card has a 1/4 so i need xlr to 1/4 cable but i need to know do i buy hi z or lo z?

Is the "Line In" on your soundcard a TRS connector... if so, get a balanced cable (Lo-Z) with an XLR connector on one end and a 1/4" TRS connector on the other end. If the "Line In" on your soundcard doesn't have a TRS connector on it... get an un-balanced cable (Hi-Z) with an XLR connector on one end and a normal 1/4" connector on the other end.

NOTE: TRS = Tip, Ring, Sleeve... it look likes the 1/4" connectors on stereo headphones.

PS... you really should be asking this question on the other forum for more replies, rather than the mic forum. Anyway, the above should help... have fun and good luck.

i believe its trs my sound card is creative audigy platinum 2zs but i am not to sure can you double check for me. i really am clueless on these terms.

edit i just checked it says 1/4” Stereo Jack so what do i get?

k thanks man really appreciate it. right now i am using the 1/4 to 1/4 unbalanced. so buy buying this quality should improve alittle right?

Yeah, and you're welcome... and don't forget to make sure it's balanced.

Bye, have fun... :)
Don

Sounds to me like that may be a 1/4" stereo line input, so a balanced in won't work very well.

so what will work well? it is a 1/4" stereo..........confusion

Harvey, thanks for catching that. arcaxis... thanks for helping antman out. antman... sorry for misunderstanding, and the above should answer your question. Have fun, Don

i want to use the xlr.......... so i buy balanced xlr-1/4?? u guys got me confused

Just a side note. Don't confuse the type of connector with the impedance of a cable. They tend to be unrelated.

Is there a particular reason you were wanting to use the xlr? For your application, you wouldn't find any noticeable difference between the xlr and 1/4" jacks. Normally, balanced lines (using either XLR or 1/4" TRS jacks) will provide a slightly better signal, primarily when running long distances or in areas of higher electromagnetic interferrence. However, unbalanced lines (with 1/4" mono jacks) are almost as good over short runs.

Your soundcard only supports unbalanced connections anyway, so even if you used the balanced XLR output on your preamp, the input on your soundcard is still unbalanced, negating any reason to use the XLR output.
