I know hi z and low z have to do with impedance, but what's the difference?

Does it have to do with whether or not the cables are XLR to XLR or XLR to 1/4"? And what is the difference as far as sound goes?

As simple as I can explain it. If you want more tecnhical just ask.

First of all high needs to go to high and low to low.

There is no difference in sound quality between the 2 as long as you are aware of the problems.
High to low - Distortion (usually)
Low to high - not enough level

To get a high to low to work or the opposite you need a Direct Box.
High generally fit a 1/4 phone plug and cables- unbalanced, and should be kept short. Low uses a balanced XLR.

Do a search on balanced and unbalaced

So if I were to say, mic drums or amps(using XLR mics) and I only had XLR to 1/4" cables, I would be alright to plug it into my mixer's 1/4" jack and record, right?

And if so, what if I needed to use phantom power... Can I still do that on a XLR to 1/4"?

No. You need a pre for the mic, unless you have a mixer with a mic/line switch on it. Then you switch to "mic".

No. At line inputs you dont run through the mixers Phantom

Why is it that high Z uses unbalanced and low Z uses balanced?
