Hey guys..my names Nick I'm from indianapolis and I'm 22..I like long walks on the beach and .....:D..anyway

I recently had to move away from my band, and the place we usually record at. I'm getting an apartment(not ideal for recording x_x) so I'm not really going to be able to record drums or be very loud at all-though my dad has a studio nearby I could record drums in and do live stuff.

1 - Is it a bad idea to record onto a digital recorder (tascam dp-02) and put it into a DAW to mix? It seems like the most portable solution to me, but hey..I could be wrong. Would it be a better idea to just buy an external soundcard? That's the only way I've ever done recording so I apologize for my ignorance. :)

2 - I'm buying a new computer..not really looking to spend much more than $600 on it. This is one I found-"HP Pavilion p6644y Special Edition Desktop " (it wont let me post a url yet haha...its on bestbuys website) think there's something better for my price range? I've heard a lot of good things about Reaper around here and a lot of other places so I was planning on using that...

I haven't really spent a whole lot of time being an engineer - I've always just played. My experience stops at mixing track levels, adding fx and panning haha. I'm really interested in learning everything I can about it and making at least semi-decent recordings and this seems like a good place to start.

Welcome to paradise, Nick with 3 'I's. I once saw a cartoon that had a dragon in it called "Snarkk with 2 'k's".
It's not a bad idea to do what you're proposing. But there are solutions that perhaps are more convenient and will net you good results. Shortly, those who are more savvy on the computer end of things will be along to show you 'the ways'.

I friend of mine had the same problem when he went off to college.
He had his rich dad purchase him a Roland TD 20SX V-pro set and a small Mackie PA problem solved!

ok

sounds like you will be doing (one - two) tracks at a time.
if that is the case I would skip the recorder and get a small interface.
i once made some great recordings with just
ezdrummer - 99 bucks
lexicon alpha - 59 bucks
intel dual-core pc with 2gigs of ram - $450 could get you something like this or better these days
I also use reaper and have for some years

not sure what else you have, but an mxl v67g would be a good budget mic -87 bucks
throw in a presonus tube pre - 130 bucks and you could get something very usable.

If you need help setting something up just let me know, these days between the speed of computers and daws like reaper you could get a latency free system set up for a great price. After that its all about the MIX

moresound- too bad my dads not rich!!
mike - that sounds great and very affordable for me. thanks a lot man, it means alot to hear from a professional =) I'll let you know if I need any help, much appreciated!
