A hi-pass filter does what it says - allows the highs to pass. So it filters low frequencies. It's generally a fixed point with a rolloff (for example 6db per octave).
A lo-pass filter is the inverse - allows lows to pass.
The terminology can get confusing when someone talks about a HPF and a low shelf. Are they the same? Are they the opposite? How about a rumble filter and a HPF?
This is the problem with not having enough dedicated terminology for the whole field ... we have this nerdy kinda mish-mash. It's quite endearing I guess.
