Hello everybody, I've been lurking around for a while, trying to get some ideas for purchases and techniques. I've narrowed down what I'd like to do, and I'd like some of your opinions. Here's my situation:

I've got a little "home studio" in my basement in which I record my band. We've done two CD's there, and got a decent sound out of it, but I feel it could be better. I'm primarily a drummer, so my studio reflects that. I'm planning on changing out some gear to improve the sound. This is what I've got for mics currently:

Rode NT2
(2) AKG C3000's
Sennheiser MD421
(3) Sennheiser e604's
(2) AKG D112's
Beyer M201
(4) Shure SM57's

I'll be running it all into the new M-Audio Octane 8 and Firewire 18/14, more likely than not (I'm selling a VS1680 to move to a PC-based setup). From what I've read, the Octane 8 is supposed to be 8 channels worth of DMP3, but the specs look cleaner than the Tampa, so I'll have to wait and see...

I'd like to get rid of the C3000's, and replace them with a pair of small-diaphragm condensers, like Rode NT5's or possibly SP C4's. The C3000's sound pretty stale to me, if that makes any sense...they've got poor detail, and they don't really help the drum sound any. I'd use the NT5's or C4's for drum overheads and acoustic guitars.

I'm also thinking about getting rid of one of the D112's, mainly because I have one bass drum, and it doesn't sound as full as the 421 on toms. I'm thinking about trying a Sennheiser e609...I've gotten fantastic electric guitar tones with the e604, and I think the e609 would probably be a little bit bigger/fuller sounding. Also, has anyone used it on floor toms? The e604 doesn't have quite enough "beef" (low-end) on my 14" tom, which I tune pretty low. Adding lows doesn't help the situation much.

Finally, I'd like to pick up another vocal mic (I'll be tracking multiple vocals this summer). The NT2 is a great mic, so I'd like something that would complement it. I'm thinking about something like an NT1000 or a B1...any opinions on how different they sound from the NT2?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and please let me know what you think...

I'll be able to offer you advice on the C4's and B1 sometime next week, if you're holding out for a while. From what I've heard you'll get a lot more out of the c4's than the nt5's, but then a pair of 603's or 012's would probably be pretty good too.
