Yeah, that was me, though I don't remember from way back in 2000. I was in the midst of a 12 year writer's slump and not recording at all at that time between 1993 and 2005. I picked it back up in 2005 having purchased a Zoom MRS 802 workstation. I've gone through alot of changes even since then. I remember being active here a bit in 2007 or 8. Back in 2005, when I got the Zoom I swore up and down I'd never use my PC for recording music. I've evolved since then to using the PC exclusively. In fact, I recently bought a laptop dedicated to recording.
Regarding my above post from 2000. Now you don't have to listen for the "remnants". You can see them in the wavforms!
Thanks for the "Welcome back".

John,

As I get older, I don't remember much either....;)

Welcome back!

Best wishes,

Lloyd

moresound,

That is funny, but very true!

Best wishes,

Lloyd

Hey Lloyd, the name is Henry and I'm quickly approaching 60!
I think the physical body break down is worst. I remember jumping down off 4 foot stages to get to the FOH but now I have to walk around out back and take the stairs. OUCH.:(

Hey, Thanks so much for the warm "Welcome Back", guys!:)

I was wondering if anybody could direct me to a good thread here regarding recording audio and MIDI on a laptop computer. That's an issue I'm really having a problem with lately. Keeping buffers low, dealing with latency, etc.
My laptop is only a few months old. Has 2.1 ghz processor (Dual Core Athlon II), 3 gb of RAM running Windows 7. With it I use a Line 6 Pod Studio UX2 for vocal recording. It's a 64 bit system, but still I get low resource issues. I've tried turning everything off I don't need and keeping the buffers high as possible. I don't use effects while recording. This helps a little, but I still get those annoying cracking sounds and error messages.
Somebody on another forum suggested going to 4 gb RAM. How well would this work? Can anybody suggest anything? I'd appreciate any help in this.

Also, is there an area to post and share original music? I kinda remember doing that here before.
:)JB

How many tracks are you running?

I always find this stuff weird, because on my 333 Mhz, 768 MB RAM Apple G3 ten years ago I had none of these problems. My current Mac is about 1/2 of yours in every category.

Hi Henry,

Like you, my physical body break down is the worst, too. I'm approaching 63 and I'm finding "that my mind is writing checks that my body can't cash." ;)

I don't do any jumping either.

Best wishes,

Lloyd

I mix all of my MIDI tracks down to a stereo WAV file to record the vocal track over. SO the answer to your question is two to four tracks and I STILL have memory issues. It's ridiculous, I know. Something's going on that shouldn't be!
Is there anything different about a LAPTOP over a Desktop that could case these problems? The problem is so bad that sometimes I question the logic of using a damned PC to record! But then most people who do this probably have a much better system than I do. I'm really beginning to HATE the damned thing!

It is ridiculous. You should be able to do what you are asking. Like I said, I can record a dozen tracks no problem on my Dual 1 GHz/ 1.5 GB RAM 5 yr old hand-me-down Mac (that you can get for $150 on Craigslist).

Thinking out loud: what are the system requirements for the Line 6 Pod Studio UX2 and does your system meet them?

Go on all the companies sites and make sure you have all the latest drivers.

I don't recall what recording app you're using... try download Reaper and see if it works.

Phone or email Line 6 and ask them WTF?

You will figure this out, I'm pretty sure it's something stupid, I very much doubt your computer isn't good enough. :)

I just noticed your name... any relation to http://www.johnbowen.com/ ?

John was the first clinician for Moog synthisizers and later worked with Sequential Circuits and Korg. He's a synth designer giant. I spent an evening with him talking about synths in the 80's.

I know all about THAT John Bowen but I'm no relation to him (at least nothing close). Nice to know that I share a name with such a talented and tech savy dude!

Thanks for your advise.

Hi John. Welcome back! Hey, have you looked at any of the usb mics out there? They're making some pretty amazing sounding ones now for decent prices. Since you only mentioned the one mic, I thought you might be interested.

See you around campus!

Jake
