Im using a v-amp pro and have to have the noise gate cranked right up, otherwise even at low volume i get noise when im not playing.

How do bands like killswitch etc manage, with the volumes and gain they use, not to get feedback, noise, etc?

What guitar are you using? the pick ups and body make a huge differance, and the amount of gain you THINK you need may be way to much.

On top of that, to much of anything in your eq settings can cause problems, if your trying to get that heavy scooped eq sound your bass and treble are problebly really high, and that can cause a mess, if you have the right guitar and the right setting, ou dont even need a gate!!!!!!

Maybe its just the V-Amp not doing what you want. Could be your pickups too.

I have a Pod Pro and its noise gate is pretty amazing.

I can have it fully cranked with Max distortion and gain and my hands off the strings standing near the cab and it dont make a peep.

I am imagining that any of Killswitches amps are just not noisy even at high gain.

Any good head that doesnt need additional noisy pedals I have ever played wasnt too noisy. Nothing a simple noise gate couldnt tame.

Its an Ibanez RG470, humbuckers but probably not very good ones. I dont like that scooped sound, mids are mid to high, bass is mid to low, treble is high, presence is high. Gain is like 3 o clock. I quite like the tone i've got, but it doesn't bring out pinched harmonics very well, and theres the noise.

id start by bringing down the presense, thatll cause big time feedback!!!!

and look into a guitar with a heavy body and decent pickups, les pauls dont really feed unless you want them to!!!!!

Try these settings if you are running direct: Amp model = Modern High Gain , Gain= 55, Bass=55, Mid=50, Treble=85, Presence=85, volume=90, Cab model= 1x8 vintage tweed, Compressor:Sense=4.5:1, Attack= 5ms, Noise gate= -69 db ,Configuration= Studio 1.
To access all of these settings you will need to use the V-Amp Editor software.

I totally forgot you could edit stuff through the pc...What do i need, would a USV midi interface do???

Yea a USB Midi interface will work, like the M-Audio Uno, which is what I use.

Let me know once you get that up and running, and I will send you a patch I have that is similar to killswitch.

are you talking about recording or playing live?

I use to play with a distortion pedal a lot without having noise problems,,, just using the amp at clean channel,,,,,,,,,

But if you ask me now, my advise is: use the amp gain,, it's works for me,,, the amp gain it's even better than using a external distortion pedal,,, and if you want even more gain an Ibanez tube screamer or a Maxon overdrive (the one I use) will help you a lot,,,,, sometimes you may think it's not enough cranked up,,, but you have to deal a lot till you have the right setting,,,,,,,,

It's just an advise, I've been playin a few yrs live and always keep changing settings a lot ,,, but in the end desition is yours,,,,,
