Hi hi hi
new and very confused, been writing my own lyrics for a while just because I enjoy it and never really did anything with them.
Now I've been asked to send an MP3 recording to see if I actually have any talent or if its all just a figment of my cloudy immagination.
Ok, so how the hell do I do this and what do I need to do it with.
Please type slowly, I'm not blonde but probably the next best thing.
If you do use any big words so long as they are in the dictionary I should be ok.

Welcome to the BBS.

There are several options, the things which will primarily dictate the best way to go for you are your budget and your method of recording.

Loosely speaking you could either go with a digital multitracker or just record, mix etc straight into a computer, but within those setups there are still many options and lots of decisions to make.

Will you be recording one thing at a time or do you need to be able to record simultaneous inputs? What sort of music is it and what sort of instruments/sources do you need to record?

And what is your budget?

Sorry to respond to your question with more questions but an idea of your circumstances will help people to give advice more suited to your needs.

Sounds to me like they want to know more about your writing and performing talent....
Now is NOT the time to start learning the art of recording.

Get thee unto a recording studio!

You can learn how to do your own recordings later, on the side.

as always, IMO

I wish I could but that is very tricky for me with work, where I live and the time I have to do it in.
Might have found a way round this for the time being but will have to delve into the whole confusing world of recording eventually so hey.
Budget is a funny question because I'm not sure what I would need basically to be realistic.
I only do the lyrics anyway, playing an instrument eludes me completely bar drums so I need to be able to receive music files and record the lyrics over them and be able to bounce that back and forth between two computers.
All very confusing I know but that seems to be the way this could work.
I have no idea, if either of you have a vague direction to steer me in steer away because I am totally lost.

Recording school: DAY ONE....buy a 4-track Tascam cassette recorder and Shure SM57 microphone with cable. Read the manual carefully.

DAY TWO...with manual at your side, record your song.

DAY THREE...Re-listen to your song to make sure it sound as good as it did on DAY TWO. Take your Tascam recorder to a guitar player and ask him to transfer your song to his PC for the purpose of making a CD and MP3.

That's it in a nutshell! No kidding. it'll work.

And, if you don't have a recording booth in your house, make sure wife isn't home. drag 3 to 4 mattress "preferabley the same size" into the quietist room of your house. prop one agenst the wall and two others on either side. put your mic inside on a mic stand if you have it, if not just hold it. and face the back mattress and there you go a instance recording booth.

well sorta, but it does work.

then get everything back in place before wife gets home this is very important.

But........ Gudio has a point. unless your going to do this daily goto a studio.
it will cost less then buying the equipment and doing it yourself and it will sound a lot better.

Ok, thanks, that helps a lot and I have no worries on the wife front.
1) I'm female
and 2) I live with my dog and he really couldn't give a damn.
Thanks for all the info tho :)
