If I had $800 to spend on a laptop, I would get a used/refurbished Macbook Pro. But, that's just me.

You need a good processor, Intel Core Duo, 2 GB RAM, and a good Motherboard, but the important thing is the sound card/interface... if you want to run Cubase, then you may go for a M-Audio, Presonus, Edirol, etc... Digidesign is only for Protools (remember that).
