Hey...you...what's up with this cloud?

I'm tweaking an idea that Innovations gave me for hanging a cloud over my mixing position. I'm thinking about gluing four washers to a hunk of rigid fiberglass before wrapping the whole thing with fabric. (See pic below.)

Once the panel is wrapped, I'll run a big loop of fishing line through the fabric and through one pair of washers, then do it again with the other pair of washers.

Then I'll flip the whole panel so that it's washer-side down and tug on the two loops of fishing line until all the slack is on the top side. Last, I'll hang the two loops of fishing line over two pairs of ceiling hooks.

Seems simple enough, but I've got a concern. The washers will keep the fishing line from tearing upward through the fiberglass, but they may not keep the fishing line from moving sideways while trying to migrate toward the center. Can anybody think of anything I could glue to the surface that would brace the washers away from each other? It would have to be flat, strong, and lightweight. It would also have to be something that I could cut to length, and it can't be sharp enough to cut through the fishing line.

Got any ideas?

you got any peg board layin around. just to a couple strips and skip the washers all together- i.e. cut a strip of peg board 1" wide by 1'-6" long- lay 2 pieces on that so the ends would line up similar to where you are showing washers- then loop you wire through the holes in the peg board (doesnt have to be peg board- maybe 1/8" plywd. or luan with a few holes drilled.

Good Idea!

Why not thread eyebolts through the insulation?
That's what I was going to do initially, but the idea of using fishing line appealed to me not only because it would give a cleaner appearance but also because I think it will be easier to get the panel to hang parallel to the ceiling if I use loops of line.

That's a friggin' awesome idea. Thanks!

You would still have loops, just above the panel rather than through.

Oh, I get ya. Push four eye bolts through the fiberglass from the side that will be the top of the panel. Thread nuts and large washers on the bolt ends sticking out the other side. Then run loops of line or wire through the eyes on top and drape them over the ceiling hooks, right?

That makes sense, but if I did it that way wouldn't I have to install all that hardware AFTER I wrapped the panel? If so, I think that runs a higher risk of wrecking the fabric than the pegboard idea. I suppose I could also solve the problem by not wrapping the top of the panel, but I like the idea of completely encasing the fiberglass fibers, and I also want to be able to take this thing down and vacuum it from time to time. That's a much safe job if the whole panel is wrapped.

How are you going to thread the line through the wrapped panel? If you are wrapping the back of the panel, why not suspend the panel from the fabric? There are a number of solutions for that.

I was planning on pulling it through with a big-ass needle.

I'm listening. Go on...

P.s.

Just curious if people are catching the Rolling Stones reference in the thread title.

In retrospect, I think that "Hey! (Hey!) You! (You!) What's up with this cloud?" might have been funnier.

Well my preferred solution is grommets, but other people will chime in with their ideas . . .
