Hey muttley - I busted my nut

On my strat. The original old, chipped, long-overdue-for-a-change original nut finally broke. So I went out and bought a pre-slotted graphite nut. I knew I'd have to do some filing to get it to fit, but I fucked it up and broke it too. Lol.

What tips can you give me to fit a new one? My main issue seems to be getting the curve right so it fits in the groove without rocking.

Make sure the slot is clean. Use a fine square rat tail file to do that or mock up a square sanding stick and use the finest grade paper you can find (320 or similar). You dont want to remove anything but old gunk and possible glue residue.

Following that make sure you have the right radius on the nut. If the nut is to thick for the slot reduce the nut not the slot. You can do that on a flat fine file or sand paper. When you have it in the slot nice and snug but not tight get back to me..
