Been following the polar pattern, etc. thread. I got to thing...

Is there ANY way you could possibly think of to get a cardioid
pattern out of a pressure transducer?

Sure, drill a hole(s) in the back of it to let some of the sound get into the backside. What kinda hole(s) is where you run into the problem.

Most pressure gradient mics tend to be omni at very low frequencies, gradually changing to "very" directional at high frequencies (almost hyper, but without the rear lobe). The change over from omni to cardioid usually starts down low, increasing to maximum cardioid pattern at around 1 kHz, then becoming more directional once you get past 5 or 6 kHz.

Does any of that help, or should I go into more detail?

I'm just trying to figure-out a most basic concept of what might be going-on in a microphone that is using what has been called a "pressure focus" technique as dubbed by a manufactuer to get cardioid from a pressure transducer.

Whatcha wanna bet that whoever wrote the ad didn't like "pressure gradient" and came up with a new, easty to say "ad speak" term?

How about " pressure controlled", "pressure modeling", "adjustable pressure", "pressure differential" (Wait, I like that one - I'm keeping that one for myself.), "frequency-dependent pressure", "Vari-Press", "pressure zone", "Adjust-o-Press", you get the idea.
 
Ahhh... But No. But Maybe.

Actually, it wasn't on there like that before until I starting asking questions about the mic. I asked about the cap and it turns-out to be a pressure transducer from Sweeden. When I asked about getting cardioid from it, that's when the "pressure focus" technique came-up. Of course, that's about all he'll say, which I fully understand, but I just can't seem to get it out of my head to try and figure-out even the basic of basic concepts on this.

I'm sure it's not at all some marketing ploy; if anything something simply to differentiate as in maybe they didn't want to use "pressure gradient " simply because it is a pressure transducer used in a pressure gradient fashion somehow.

Oh well. Thank You anyhow as I didn't even think of drilling a hole(s) in the back! I tell ya, if ya think too hard, you can't even think of the simplest things!

So, do I detect a slight possibility that there may one day may be an HG Microphone walking amoung us?
