I have decided that based on what I have heard of your current productions, and where and how you are proceeding with those projects, that you win my unofficial award for "homerecordist most ready for the commercial arena" I,d like to wish you continued success and thank you for the contributions you make to the board. Now if you dont mind, how about helping me out a little here..

First of all, I am establishing myself as an independent record label . My decision was influenced by reading these two books Tim Sweeneys "Guide to releasing Independent Records" and "All you need to know about the Music Business "by Passman. There were others but these two lit the fire for sure. I believe it is possible to achieve success as an independent even more today that it has ever been in the past. I like the idea of this approach also due to the fact that it will be "Me" and me alone that will decides whether I succeed or not. Of course, my definition of success may mean nothing to those standing on the outside but as long as Im progressing towards my goal, I will accept ,adapt and move on. It will of course require a certain amount of capital and I, like most, am certainly limited there ,but have alotted a certain amount that I feel that I need for each phase. Its gonna require alot of work and again Its up to me, the more I put in the more I get back. I am a one man operation. I have learned over the years (I may be older than most of the peeps on the board) that you cant count on anyone for anything.
So far, the first year has been about building the studio and focusing on the engineering aspect of it all. This has been tough but so much fun. I feel now that I can produce the product well enough to be a player in the commercial arena. The hardest part of it all for me is...TO MAKE SURE THAT I DONT TRY TO WEAR ALL THE HATS AT THE SAME TIME!...I know that Im gonna have to be each component of the whole operation, but I dont have to be them all at the same time and focusing on that ,is a task in and of itself. Thats when it all "seems" impossible to accomplish.
This post is becoming longer than I intended but, I hope that maybe that I can encourage all that want to do something in the the music business, to set those sights really high , and methodically go for it with all your heart while you are young. You should always have in your plan the desire to get help at the Major Label level but you shouldnt count on that solely as your only means of success. Those guys are businessmen, and If I were in there shoes, I would be more apt to take on prospects that already have something going and requires the least amount of my own capital, then to have to develope "potential talent" and produce the recordings, manufacture, promote, distribute and then bind this investmest so that the competition doesnt benefit from all of necessary footwork it took to make it all happen. Have a plan, stick to it, make changes along the way as needed, something might happen before you make it to your destination, that far exceeded what you plan, and of course that will be great, but that wouldnt have happened had you not started the journey.
One more thing, dont play the RACE card. If you are a minority of any kind, your road is gonna be tougher, rather than complained and generate anger that will have all of inner power going in what I call the wrong directions..use the adversity as an impetus to want it even more. I guarantee that you will be quite happy with allies you gain for simply being just, fair and full of integrity keeping at heart to do the right thing for the right reasons. In GOD, I must trust in the outcome and I do accept it.
Ive never been one to bant back and forth with peeps on the board and wont start now. If you dont agree with anything Ive said thats fine..throw it away..take what was beneficial and move on.. my desire is only to help.

O K back to my need for help..

I am contemplating maybe releasing and EP, whats gonna deter that is..I know that its gonna require putting on the PROMOTORS hat..which for me is gonna be absolutely the toughest aspect of the whole deal because it requires absolutely non stop relentless pure full steam ahead bulldog tenacity to be effective..These are not traits of an artist. Once I start promotions...everything else stops for me..thats the plan. When I start ,everything has to be put into. It means not taking no for answer when it comes to getting your music heard..Sorry ..getting off tangent again :)

Here are my questions: This was originally addressed to Cros but all others are welcome to chime in if you like.

1. What CD burners and what CD Media are you using for premasters that will be sent to the CD manufacture for the glass master? I currently have the Masterlink, the TDK Velow CDRW as my burners..Software im using Nero, Sound Forge and of the masterlink has its own OS and proprietary. Ive been reading lately that the CD Manufacturers will not aceept anything but DAO premasters. Anyone have any expirience in this area?

2.I would like to establish a website. Im not fully understanding what web hosting is..are these guys providing the server where all of your web pages are kept..does that include internet mail..I would like to have the ability to stream audio from the website and of course post the mp3 there and sell the CD;s there. Im not to sold on the mp3.coms as a means of promotion..i simply dont go there or any other site to look for new music..if i go to any of them it because i went there due to someones elses link and that reason only and leave. There may be some benefits but mot as I can see for entry level independents. But maybe you can convince me otherwise.

3. What web host , If Im using the correct term are you guys using? Is there something else that I would need in addition to the web host to make it full service.

Well, I think that'll do for now :) I regret that I have not posted in this forum in the past but will try to if I feel I can contribute help at anytime. I love what Im hearing from all of you guys. You are the producers of today and tomorrow for sure. Providing that you dont give up!

Thanks to all in advance!!!!!!

elbenj,

great post. You are a man with a plan , and that kind of man is unstoppable.

There's one thing that can help you in your bid to success. I firmly believe and have seen that one only needs two GREAT songs to make a CD sell millions of copies and establish an artist for a reasonable period of time.

Do you have two such songs? If you do, forget everything else and go full speed ahead, WOT, with the promotions. The public only needs to hear the songs a few times for your CD to catch fire.

What channels do you have to sell the CD. How do you plan to establish a relationship with stores like sam Goody's.

The average major label release only sells 800 copies. I think a determined person can sell this much in one month, assuming that you have your requiste two wildcard songs.

Tom Sweeny's book is my bible. I have one release under my labels belt. As long as you stick to your plan you will have some success. I am kind of busy right now but I will try to answer some of your questions later.

Hey Cyan,

Yes, I believe I have two such songs and I bet everyone that has written a song feels they do also, if not ,we are in big trouble :)

The 800 sells a month sounds awful low for major distribution, and I would be tickled pink if I could do that as an independent..

There is really no comparison between independents and majors.
The real key is..that as an independent you dont have to sell as many records to make a substantial profit..due to all the overhead costs the majors create or pretend to anyway..

well elbenj,

THe average major label release does not sell 800/month.

It sells 800 copies period.

An example was in audio circles a month ago. They spent $2 million on the Cd and promotion and it only sold 378 copies in its first two months.

If you have the requisite two songs, GO FOR IT. Thats all that the Cd buying world wants.

sorry it took me so long to read this post, but i was working extra hours at the day job so that i can take a two week vacation without getting phone calls.

1) i use Sonar to record the individual tracks and to mix, then i use Samplitude Master to master and burn CDs. I use Waves Gold Bundle for EQ, Multiband Compression, and Peak Limiting.

2) My site is hosted on yahoo/geocities, but I'll be moving it soon (probably to cedant.com) because geocities does not allow you to do MP3 streaming. Yes, a web-hosting site will give you access to one of their servers for your web presence.

Thanks for the compliment. It's been hard work and (outside of making the music) more blockades than forward progress but i love it.

I have to wear all the hats (producer, songwriter, manager, business planner), but i also love being in the driver's seat. I'm a songwriting member of BMI (performing rights organization) and recently incorporated my company. now i'm trying to add Publisher to my role. i want to become listed as a publisher under BMI. Each time a song is played, the publisher gets 6 cents and the artist gets 6 cents. If there is no publisher then the artist split the 12 cents.

just remember this:
you'll sell more copies of your CD/EP after your gigs than you will in mom and pop stores unless you are getting radio spins. then, you will sell the same amount in the stores as you do at your gigs until you get to the point where your song is spinning non-stop on the radio (which mine isn't).

great thing is, if it cost you $2.50 per CD and you sell your EP for $10, that's $8.50 profit per CD. no major label artist gets that. NONE!!!
