Hey, a little help here...

OK, here's what I'm trying to do. I am trying to put together a project studio that will be able to record eight tracks at a time. I have a Peavey Unity board, 12 ch. with neutrik pre's, as well as other live gear(amps, FX, EQ) but am looking at stepping up to a Behringer or Mackie. At any rate, I am cunfused about two major points...

1. can i use the 1/4 in. ins on my Peavey, or any board for that matter, as outs to an adat or something? Possibly to a CPU based setup? I read something on this BBS that said it would bypass the EQ?

2. How do i get the sound from my board, to an adat, or other external device, then to my CPU for mastering, with the ability of tweaking each track?

I am getting very confused, the more i read, and any help would be appreciated. BTW, i have a celeron 500 mhz, i think 64 megs, and budget is somewhat undecided. Approx. $3500 for everything...board, monitors, nt1, adat or digital multitrack, compressor, etc?

Okay, question #1.

If you patch out of a Channelstrip's patchpoint-You will not be able to EQ the signal going to tape with the channelstrip EQ. The Pathcpoints on most mixers are PRE-EQ, unless you have a board that has a POST FADER PATCHPOINT.

This is just a fact of life!
I ecord this way on Tascam DA-38's-they are patched into my Mixer's patchpoints (Mackie 1604Vlz Pro). So the signal goes like this.

Source
Mic
Mic input.
Mackie onboard Pre-amp.
Patchpoint send to recorder's channel.
Patchpoint return from recorder's channel.
Mackie's onboard E.Q..
etc.,...

(I hope this is making sense to you!).


question #2.

Probably the easiest way is to get a "lightpipe" card-so that you can go Digital In and Out into your PC via the Alesis Lightpipe.


IF you're using a PC you don't really NEED the Alesis unit. for what a New recorder will cost you-you can purchase a couple of 8x8(8 input / 8 output) rackmount units to interface with your pc.
For Mixers I would say get the Behringer EuroRack that is an Inline mixer.
This way you can EQ BEFORE you go into the pc.

Personally-If you plan on Recording on the PC-I would Not use a PC that was used for anything else.
I would hate to lose several month's worth of work, because I got an internet bourne virus!

Thanks Tim, that gives me tons of help. Also, you sparked a couple more questions. What do you recommend for an 8x8...and by hooking up, say three, would I then have 24 ch? Also, I was thinking ADAT because I don't have the luxury of another CPU right now, but I am confused about my other choices. I know there are many, but what is a good alternative to ADAT? I want something that I can either expand later for more tracks, or comes 16+ ready right out of the chute. What can you recommend?
