I've been reading the homerecording BBS for quite a while and I appreciate all the useful tips everyone shares. Applying the knowledge you guys have given has greatly improved my recordings over time. I'm at a point now where I need to borrow your ears to help me improve. Please listen to the song "Joy" ( http://www.mp3.com/konradmusic/ ) and let me know what you think. The song is mixed with headphones. Do I need monitors in order to get better results?

This doesn't sound bad on my machine for being mixed in headphones.

Nice song. Kind of reminded me of something from the 80's. I'm not good for mixing notes since I can only listen in lo-fi, but this sounded good. Maybe a little bit of separation between the vocals and the music may give it a little more depth, but overall I liked this.

Good vocals and good playing throughout.

Good job!

Mind you, I'm listening on computer speakers at work ( not bad speakers though). It sounds a bit muddy/boomy - lacking in sparkle. I don't really like the distortion on the guitar; it's so far back it made me listen close to see what it was. Kinda makes the music sound dirty in an unflattering way ( for lack of better descriptive words.) Part of it sounds like Bachman-Turner Overdrive will only a little overdrive. Not a bad song though. Love the message. Listened to it several times and still the same comments. Keep working on it. And keep the JoY!

I'm listening on headphones myself, but I think monitors would be needed.

I thought musically it was a pretty nice song. Nice feel to it.

I also thought it was a little muddy and heavy on the low end. I'd work on cutting some lows out of the guitars and even vocals. Nobody yet seems to have listened on a decent set of speakers. But someone probably will. I'm guessing the heaviness is going to blast them a bit. We'll see what they say.

TripleM - Yes, the low end is always a problem for me. Do I need to EQ better while tracking or do I fix it while mastering?
