You're way hot on the levels - digital distortion is BAD.

cool man!!

first, you got a 6 meg file there my good man. and the song ends around 3:50 but there's 7:23 worth of time, i think thats why it's so big. see if you cant cut the silence there bro.

i liked the song alot, there are other guys here who can flame it, so i'll leave that to them( im just not good enough yet)
one thing that i did notice however , i think the vocals on the chorus could have been a bit more centered, it seemed one side was panned a little harder. but im listening on cans , so on speakers it might not bug me as bad.

i havent even finished my first.

great job man .

peace

yeah...i screwed up trying to transfer files from c.d. to wav. to mp3...but this is all really new...i had the vocals centered and they got lost pretty easy but as a first draft i was pretty pleased...and the digital distortion was my only choice i recorded it all direct and now i know it isnt the sound i want but thanks too all for at least giving it a listen...i wasnt sure anyone would and that is sooo cool the only one i have to rely on for feedback is my wife and its not always so impartial you know? lol...again thanks.

Hey dude,

Not sure how you transfered to mp3 but, before that, did you track/record the tracks with digital distortion or did you push the mix too hard? If it is the latter, remix and don't push any of the tracks beyond 0. From what I could stand, it is a cool tune. If you can remix it w/o killing the song with distortion, please do.

holy cow!?!?! that is NOT how it sounds on my c.d....man i wisjh i knew what i was doing....i used my boss 1180 to turn this track into WAV. file,.....then had to convert it to mp3..and apperently lost all total control somewhere in bwtween lemme see if i can fix it ...thanks for pointing it out.good lord........

ok i think i have it fixed i hope so anyway.....letme know if this is better...or i guess maybe its not!lol

thANKS JAMAL

Yeah,
Your mix and tracking (behind the distortion veil) told my ear that you know what your doing better than represented. Check out other forums on the board for hints as to the culprit. Maybe the mixing/mastering forum. Maybe a smart person will help you inside this very thread. Maybe I'll get to hear the tune in all its glory. Maybe I'll post some more ambiguous, half-ass advice when you put the true mix up. Maybe I'll be keen by then. Maybe........Maybe......................:D

LOL...ya ya..sure you will....i still cant beleive that someone in MINN. actually heard some of my stuff....after years of telling every one what i would do if i could..then (gulp),,getting the gear to actually do it...sorta have to put up or shut up...anyway as i said before..the only feedback i get is from freinds...and they cant get past the fact that someone they know made that music so all i ever get is "man that is so awesome"....when i know that half of it is crap.but again thanks for listening at the least!

yes!!!!!!!!!!!!

it's under 3 meg's now, and sounds much cleaner!!

way to go man!

Yes, that is very trippy to find yourself exposed. I've been home recording and puting mixes up to get help and opinions (throwing myself to the wolves) for a little over a year now. I was, and am in the same boat, of no accurate feedback. I've been a basement songwriter for over 15 years. This place will let you know what is what in a progressive, positive hurry!

This mix is actually not hot enough. The first one was pegging out way above 0db and this mix is barely kicking the VU meters up.Keep at it,you'll get the mixdown eventually!:-)

Nice tune.I like the use of all the guitars (like the octave stuff)without making it sound like a wall of guitar overkill.;)

I like Brandy, good singing and imagery in the lyrics. I think the drums don't work really well, especially the kick - seems too fast for the song - but that's just my opinion. The mix is way low now, and that hurts the sound quality. You want to try to get your levels up so that the loudest parts are just under 0. You might want to start by turning down the monitors/headphones and set all the sliders about half way up. Then turn the monitors up and adjust each slider til you get the mix. Keep an eye on the the overall level. When you mix, run thru it several times without recording, noting where it gets loud and what instruments are pushing the levels. You can keep a track log and note the times of where you want to bring things up a bit or cut them a bit. I find that when I do this, I get the overall mix close, and I don't have to tweak it much when I mix down. Keep up the good work, you'll get the hang of it. Keep asking questions around here, there are some smarter guys than me who really know what they're doing, and everyone is usually glad to help.

i feel the same way about the drums..however i havent figured out how to redo something once i master it and i always get so damn impatient wanting to know what it will sound like(im sure im the only one with this problem?) lol..my monitors are .(GASP)...home stereo speakers..as im not independantly wealthy just yet.so when i mix down to what i THINK sounds nice the final product is almost inaudible..but i am still trying ..anyway "brandy".is probably the one song most people i know like...sad part is its actually about my sister....sad....but hey again thank you for the critiquing..as far as im concerned all the feedback is good.!

thanks jamal

On Once again...

I thought the overall vibe was ok - decent song.

I thought I heard a skip @ :26. The levels during the quiet sections were too low. I turned up the volume and then when the hard guitars hit @1:10 and 1:55 (for example) I got blasted. So I'd recommend equaling those two out.

The combination of heavy reverb and hid-mids on the lead vocals makes them tough to hear - indistinguishable at times. Maybe that's what you want, and it's a personal preferance thing. I would have prefered to hear what you were singing.

The little guitar part to close out the song seemed out of place to me.

On Brandy...

Another decently written song. I rather liked it. I like the way the two rhythm guitars sit together. I liked the guitar part you added @2:33. Actually you add little parts all over the place. And did it well.

As stated by others, the level is pretty low.

I wouldn't have panned the vocals so hard. At times they're singing the same thing and there were a few syncing issues. I thought the reverb was a bit overdone on this one too - but just a bit.

Jamal, I monitor and mix on my home stereo, too. When I mix, I turn the stereo up pretty loud, I've heard that's the best way to get a good mix. Not so loud that it blasts the neighbors, but loud enough to really hear everything. Set the tone controls all flat, no loudness buttons on, and get back about 10-15 feet from the speakers, if possible. Once I get the overall level close and nothing going over 0, I trust my ears and go for it. I'm still learning all this stuff, and I'm having a blast.

ok ive pretty much narrowed it down to spending more than a couple of hours mixing this stuff down ...and to make matters worse im doing it completely wrong..damn lol...if any one buys one of these Boss units disregard most of the mastering directions right of ths bat !! lol thanks for the hand up tho i think ill go try some REAL mixing for a while
