On "Axis Bold as Love" by Jimi Hendrix, there is a psychadelic effect on the drums in the last verse and chorus. Whooshing, swirling effect applied mainly to drums. Not backwards masking, and I don't think it is flangeing. This effect is sparingly applied, and appears on later cuts on different albums. What effect is being applied?

hendrix drum sound

"Blue Jay Way" by the Beatles (drum section) and "Kashmir" by Led Zepplin are examples per your website...I'll go back and listen to the Beatles to compare.

It's tape phasing. It was supposedly the first time it was done in stereo, and was a bitch to record due to the "Jimi hendrix: Setting the record straight" book by Eddie Kramer.

That's where the term "flanging" originated. It's from literally touching the flange of the reel to very the speed which creates the "flanging " effect.

Blue Jay way

This Beatles track is the same effect as "Axis Bold as Love"'...I think the Beatles entire track is flanged...on Hendrix, I believe only the drums are flanged. Thanks for solving the mystery.
