hey everyone, does anyone have any advice for me? ive got a hugeee gig tommorrow night, my band is actually playing with gwen stefani at the local amphitheater. hahhaa. anyways, ive been playing guitar for about 7 years, so im not like some beginner or anything, but ive been so busy that i havnt been able to pick up my guitar in a few days. yesterday i started playing, and was working on some solos and improving all that, needless to say after hours of playing i wasnt even aware until i stopped playing, but my fingers are not raw, but hurt sensative to touch, especially when i pick up and play the guitar, i know you all know what im talking about, and its happened a million times before, the only problem is ive got an extensive practice for the show tonight, then tommorrow, then the show is tommorrow, and at this rate, my finger tips will rip apart! haha, does anyone have any suggestions or little tricks you use? its never bothered me before, cause ive never done that and then had to play a ton more ive always just had the chance to rest my fingers for a day or so and let them get back to normal. anyone have any little home remedies? ive heard some people use crazy glue, etc etc, what are your guys tricks?

Mike, I got nothin' for ya, except to say that I hope the pain isn't too bad. Maybe you should load up with a couple of Tylenol a few minutes before the show.

It probably won't help when I tell you that you should have been working on your calluses for several weeks.

When I was in high school football we used this stuff called "Toughskin" that was a spray-on of some sort that would keep the skin of your hands and knees from getting ripped off so easily when you hit the dirt. I've never used it in a guitar-playing context, though, so I don't know if it's suited for that.

Good luck! :)

crazy glue

crazy glue will work ........ rub a few drops into your finger tips .... i have used it when i get a cut in my fingertips ......... good luck .......

Try soaking them in ice water. Then before the gig take some Advil. (morphine works too).
I used to play 12 - 18hrs a day and sometimes my fingers would get ouchy. I found that certain string types caused this problem when changing from one type to another nickel wound to stainless and vice versa. I just played through it. You might want to try some Finger - Ease after you have laid off for a while.

I would take aleve and try the super glue thing but superglue will probably muck up your strings real fast. Oh well, I guess that's better than blistering.

Long term I think the best thing you can do is practice a lot on some tough strings-build callaces. I played a steel string with heavy guage freaquently and now my finger tips are damn near bullet proof.

The callouses on my fingers are pretty hardcore but still end up getting sore if I play for a buch of hours straight. When that happens I just dont play for a day or 2 and by that time they feel absolutely fine.
So I'd say just rest em until the gig - maybe rub some neosporine (sp) on em the night before...

Anyway - have a great show!

I've used super glue to patch up a couple cuts before but I don't think it will help with callouses. In fact I think it could make it more difficult to play.
I think when the show starts the adrenaline will make you forget all about your sore fingers. Maybe you need to lighten up on the strings you may be pressing harder than necessary press just enough to het a clean buzz free sound.
Easy said than done, I know.

crazy glue

trust me the crazy glue will work .......... and it will not muck up your strings .... i have also used crazy glue to keep my hand from sweatting and sticking to the neck ...........

Another vote for crazy glue! Also after it dries I lightly file it with an emery board. Please tell Gwen that I'm sorry I haven't got back to her and that we'll have dinner and a romantic evening when she gets back from tour.:D

Tape up your fingers with some waterproof anhesive tape, found in the medical stuff at walmart, walgreens, or pretty much anywhere. Or just get over it.

I wouldn't tape the fingertips, it'll prolly wear off during the gig, probably in the middle of your most important solo! Having shreds of tape hanging in your fingers won't help. :D
I'd go for glue, OR...
Put a tourniquet in your wrist, It'll eventually numb the fingers!! :D  :D

thanks everyone! i didnt do anything, i kinda just toughed it out haha, but the gig went great, no problems! :)

I was going to suggest that getting Gwen to gently suck on them would probably take the pain away... but I see I'm too late...

:D

Congratulations for two things - playing a nice gig and for not doing anything with your fingertips other than tough it out. If you've been playing awhile that kind of pain is usually short lived.
I'd recommend to be careful with putting crazy glue on your body. Anything that gets absorbed into your skin eventually passes through your liver for cleansing.
