hi there,

i need so help regarding recording equipment. if anyone can help me that would be fab.

i have a 10 year old daughter who is totally great at singing & im not just saying that coz im her mum but she truely has a gifted voice. i would like to get her a realy good microphone that she can record her vioce on but i dont know what to get.

ive been told stag or stig lol sorry but it sounds like that.

also needs to be usb so it can go in comp. the music she sings is opera & the normal stuff like nikki minarg, rhianna etc

please help xxx

I'm going to assume your not an engineer, nor are you using this mic to record pro quality recordings. To better understand your purpose, I think letting us know what you plan on using to record with first would be helpful. Do you have any hardware for recording such as an interface, or any kind of soundcard for a computer, or a multitrack recorder? If she is going to use the mic to sing live, then a certain mic decision will be dictated based on this, as well as budget. So, I guess the factors to take into account are these.
1. What are you going to use to record your daughter
2. What is the purpose of the mic
3. What is your budget
These alone will be a good starting point to help us identify your needs. Hope we can help once you identify the following.

thankyou for responding.

this is the thing i have no idea. the computer has the normal windows recorder on it so i was going to get her to use that for now.
the purpose was to help her hear how she sounds & to help her train her voice where needed (she wants to record a song n send it to the radio but we will see lol)
my budget at this mo is upto £100 but i know the best ones are more expensive no doubt.

no im not anengineer lol :)

Your going to need a better sound card to be able to plug a decent mic into. USB mics are not good mics, just convenient. 100 is good amount for something, its just the problem of getting from the mic to into your computer without using the crappy sound card that comes with the computer and its little 1/8th inch jack. The mic would be pointless if your going to use that setup.

the computer was perposly built for gaming as i was the one that built it. the sound card is a fairly decent one but i cant remember what it is without looking. but thankyou for all your advice you have given me, i will keep it in mind. xxx

Gaming soundcards are not good for music recording. Read the stickys at the top of this forum about computer recording.

You could try getting the Audio Technica 2020 USB version (there is an XLR version but that would require an audio interface), not sure how much your sound card would affect the quality. I'l make an assumption here and say that you probably wouldn't even notice the difference... yet?

Evening Kaz,
Armistice is right. Usb mics are really only fit for skype and Youtube. But it really doesn't matter how good the mic and the path INTO the computer is, you also need a high quality path out of the machine and into decent speakers or headphones. I am sorry but you are not going to get that sort of quality system for £100.

You mentioned a recording to send to a radio station? That's a "demo" and don't sell her short on that. If she really has talent get her to a small studio. This need not cost a great deal since demos should be very short!

But there is a deeper issue here. Ten years old. If that voice really is any good it needs looking after. At that age I suspect it would be easy to damage it, like a young gymnast, swimmer etc, she is still growing and her "workload" stands watching IMHO.

See if you can get advice and help at her school or a local college (there is a music college just 200mtrs from where I was born in Northampton. Where you?).

Write to established singers for advice, specially those that started young. Lulu, Bonnie Langford...

Dave.
