Hey guys. Brand spankin new to this forum. Ive been trying to wrap my mind around this whole recording thing. So far, I have a motif xf8 and am recording that right into my computer, a lenovo, and works perfectly fine. However, I cant seem to find out how to record anything else, besides my keyboard. I am trying to start vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitars, drums, and some other instruments for certain recordings. Now, heres my question.. how the heck do I do this? haha Ive tried going through my motif, and I cant get it to work. If someone could tell me what I need, thatd be great. I have mics and all that sort, and will pick up a preamp too. Do I need a mixer? An audio interface? I am completely lost. i really need help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Mitch

P.S. If this is in a wrong part of the forum, please tell me. Thanks

An audio interface would be the first port of call and there are plenty out there with built in preamps and various numbers of inputs and outputs. Audio interfaces with built in preamps will acts as two units in one;

the preamps will turn up the analogue signal from the mic/input
the convertors will turn that analogue signal into a digital one that the computer can read

as you want to record drums as well as everything else i'd suggest looking at audio interfaces with at least 4 preamps or more.

have a read through some of the stickies in the forum as there is one about choosing appropriate audio interfaces :)

Awesome thanks! Now just to make sure I got this right, the microphone plugs in to the AI, which then plugs in via usb to my computer? And I am going to need one with phantom power. So If the AI cant do that, will I have to run the mic into a preamp, then the preamp to the AI, then to my computer? Sorry for all the questions. I just dont want to go out and spend money and have it now work. Thanks a ton!
