couple of simple questions for the experienced users of the vf160ex. i own one. what is all of this talk of transfering tracks to pc? are you talking single tracks, two mixed down stereo tracks? what do i need to do this? and if you are talking single tracks, how would i compound those tracks back in to a mix?
say drums, guitar, vocals, all from the same song, transfered to pc, edited?, mastered, and then mixed back together to create the finished product. what do i need? software, interfaces,etc,etc.?preferrably budget oriented. any help is very much appreciated.

transferring tracks

You will transfer tracks to the PC to process them with DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software, convert to mp3, upload to your website, burn to audio CDs, etc.

You can also burn audio CDs on the VF160, which is one way to transfer songs to your PC. Burn on the fostex, rip to your PC. I use CDeX ripping software but there are many.

You can also make a backup of your project to wav files on one or more CDs. This copies each track to it's own wav file. These can then be loaded into a multitrack DAW. They can also be reloaded into the fostex for later mixing on the deck.

I will let some other posters weigh in on current DAW software. I'm still using SAW Classic that I bought over ten years ago in my DJ days. I love it but I can't recommend it. Get something current.

Back-up is not necessarily the same thing as transfer to PC.
Even if you never transfer to PC (and lots of VF users don't) you will still need to back-up.
The easiest way to do this is to burn to a CD, and you can do this in Fostex format (only readable by a VF) or in standard CD rom format (readable by PC).

But backup you must. All hard drives die eventually (whether they're in a VF, a Korg, a Yammy, a PC etc etc).
