Help!!!

I have a Roland Fantom that I have been trying to connect to my computer so I can record from it. I am having NO LUCK at all. I have downloaded the free version of Sound Forge 7.0 in anticipation of purchasing it or similar software, but I canNOT for the life of me figure out how to get it to record the output from my keyboard. I'm assuming I should use a MIDI interface, but can anyone help me with some details!!!???? I would be eternally grateful.

Nope, you don't want to use a midi interface. You want to record audio from your keyboard, not midi data. Patch from the line output of your keyboard to the line in on your sound card. Click on your Windows mixer and make sure that the line input is checked as a recording source and that it is not muted. In Sounforge preferences, make sure that the line in of the sound card is selected as the recording source. After all that, it should work like a champ.

now, i hate to take advantage of free advice, but since you were so kind....

where exactly is the line in on a laptop? i'm assuming it has a sound card, so is the "line in" on the computer the mic jack? or am i missing something?
 
AH! There's the rub. Your laptop sound card may not have a line input. And laptop sound cards (stock ones) are notoriously crappy. I have a Compaq laptop that doesn't have one. You may be screwed.

ok, so the mic in is NOT a line input? when you say line input, what kind of connection is it? what does it look like?

ugh, i'm so sorry to ask such retarded questions, but you've helped me more than anyone so far.
 
It'll appear as a 1/8" connector just like the mic in. Hey, go in thru the mic in and try it. It'll either suck or work like a champ (my guess is it'll suck). Give it a shot.
 
that's what i will do: give the mic input a shot. thank you a million times for your ideas. i will let you know if it sucks or not. don't worry, if it sucks, nothing new.
