on my amp, there is the input for aux, tape, or phono, which should i use to plug into my fostex vf80? i havent gotten my fostex vf80 yet, but id like to know in advance, so please help...

Use the AUX, or even the TAPE, DO NOT use the PHONO.

i see that theres a left and right out on the vf80, should i buy an adapter that has 2 1/4's to one?

Not unless you want mono? Left out on the VF80 will go to Left in on the amp...etc...

For what you want to use it for, use the AUX send. I think in order to use TAPE, your cassette tape will have to be playing, and you'll get WAY too much hiss and other noise. The amp has RCA ins, and your VF80 has 1/4" outs, right? I used to run my Tascam 4 track to my MR-8, with a similar set up. I had an audio cable with RCA to RCA ends, and bought two mono RCA to 1/4" adaptors. You may be able to find an RCA to 1/4" cable at Radio Shack too.
This will get you going until you can buy a decent monitoring chain and can do away with using your stereo receiver.

yea, im gonna take it back and get 2, 1/4th to rca cables, is their anythign special i should look for on the packageing?

No, there is nothing, really. I think you may want to get gold tips, which is supposed to be higher quality, but I don't have them. I bought the ones I have at an electronics store here in Japan, and they are nothing special. But they work, so you shouldn't have to spend a million dollars on these things.
