Somebody please help me! I am relatively new to recording. I have a nice basic DAW setup: Mac G4 800mhz running Logic 4.8, Delta audiophile 2496, Midi synth, AT3035 for vocals, mackie 1202vlz mixer with built in mic pre's and JBL LS25 monitors. I tried recording vocals thru the AT3035, running thru the mackie into the soundcard into logic with phantom power on. There is very little signal. I boost the gain on the mixer and the speakers start to feedback. I moved the mic back farther from them. The once I see the level rise to about 0 db I recorded it. It sounded very muffled. Any suggestions? Is the problem in Logic or the mixer or the mic. Help!

Feedback?

Are you tracking with headphones? If you have the open mic blasting through your monitors than feedback would be expected.

If you are using headphones and still getting feedback then the problem is probably a loop. Are you feeding your monitor signal back into the sound card? If you are using the main outs to feed your sound card that is likely. Use the inserts for the channel to feed the card and use the main outs for monitoring.

microphone problems

I have the 1202 vlz tape out ---->soundcard in, soundcard out ---->1202 tape in. The feedback I think is related to the speakers and mic being so close, but once that is fixed, the mic signal is still weak and muffled. This is the real problem. Any clues?

mkatz: You should record your vocals with the beat playing in the headphones and the speakers turned off. If the speakers are turned on, the sound from the speakers will get into the mic and then back to the speakers and etc. This will loop infinitly thus creating the feedback effect.

Do the phantom power from the mic and the mixer match up?..if not ..I beleive that can cause the weak signal.....another problem is the speakers being on....never record with the speakers on...put on the phones.

phantom power

There is no phantom power on the mic itself but rather on the mixer. I will try recording with the speakers off and see how that works. Thanks.
