I need help with finding a simple, inexpensive and convenient solution for a wiring problem.
Here's my situation. I am stuck in 4-track (cassette no less) land for the next couple years (due to budget problems) but have aquired a few preamps, effects etc and am using a patchbay to route the signals. Some day I will get a DAW but it will be a few years.
Right now five rows of my patch bay are being used to route four inputs, two aux sends and four stereo returns. With no other mixer nothing is normaled I just need the patch bay to keep from having to get behind all my equipment wich is tucked away stealth like in a hutch type desk to blend in with the wifes (not so music friendly) bedroom decor. The hutch was self constructed and stained to match the furniture.
I am outgrowing the 20 channels(15 after the five used above) of my patchbay and would like to free those five channels up by building a narrow strip to simply house the ten 1/4 inch jacks.
I could just get another patchbay but I am out of room to house much more in my mini studio prison and don't want to waste precious rack space on another patchbay for 10 inserts.
The two options I have considered is:
1. Clip the ends of the cables in use now (one 8 1/4" wire snake cabe and two additional cables) and hard wire them to a strip of mounted female end jacks wich is with in my construction and wiring abilities but I would prefer not to cut the cables.
Pro's - easy to construct and mount in minimal space.
Con's - cutting and rewiring good cables for a temporary fix for a few years and they would not be usefull for much else later on in DAW land.
2. Buy ten male to male adapters - but the ones I have found so far are not very conductive to being mounted on any kind of strip. All I can find are the plastic or metal barrel type of inline adapters that are really marketed for patching two shorter cables to make one longer one and not really designed for good signal quality.
Pro's - I don't have to cut the plastic encased cables tips and rewire them saving their usefulness in the future.
Con's - I have not found any that are mountable in a narrow strip and I question the quality of the ones I have found.
Does anyone have either another approach or a source for good quality mountable adapters?
This is a pretty much unbalanced system so we are not talking Mogami quality but I don't want any extra snap, crackles or pops either. Ya know what I mean.
Thanks in advance for any help.
