I need some help with my Great River ME-1NV. The balanced out of the ME-1NV is XLR, I want to test the preamp tonight and don’t have an XLR to TRS 1/4 cable. My motu 828 uses 1/4 TRS inputs. Can I go into the Motu 828 XLR inputs (which are preamps), leave the phantom power off and leave the trim turned all the way down? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated since I think on Sunday it’s going to be tough to find a XLR to 1/4 TRS cable so that means I’ll have to wait till Tuesday to find out what this sounds like.
Thanks,
Frank

All GC stores will be open Sunday and Monday. It's some kinda of extra special sale. As opposed to the regular special sales they have every weekend.

While you are waiting, why not read the manual over, etc...You could always make your own if you have good wire and the right connectors. This is one of the reasons I invested in buying mogami wire as well as tons of XLR and 1/4" neutrik connectors.

I do that with my roland 2480 ---from my preamp into the XLR'S

You will be going from one preamp into another and, obviously, that's not the ideal setup. You might not be able to hear the Great River unless you use some gain on the MOTU. And if you can hear the Great River, you have to wonder if you're hearing the sound of the preamp or whether or not the MOTU is contributing some color or something else. I don't think you are going to destroy anything but I would wait until I got my hands on the proper cables. Besides, who wants to crawl behind a rack and wrestle with wires twice!

I love reading manuals. The longer the better. It's my tradition when I get new gear, like waiting for Christmas, I read the manual before I take the gear out of the box. I savor them, call me nutty. I was just being anxious and then today life took over and couldn’t get to the store anyway. Maybe tomorrow. Thanks for the help and advice,

Frank

I hesitate to run 'anything' through my motu preamps. Get the cables, the 1nv is a great box.

Frank justa thought;;;;If you have effect returns you may be able to bypass the preamps in your mixer...
also i run thru my xlr's with the gain all the way down and it works good

Hey all. I've always question this application. I don't know about the MOTU mic pres, but doesn't the mic pre input (XLR) has "inherent gain"? Example: " 25 to 55, line input 0 to 60? I'm definately not an expert so this is sort of a question! So...when you plug into the XLR input, are you not hearing the
"inherent gain" of the mic pre you are going into? I'm thinking this because when you plug into the XLR input you can still get a signal without turning up the volume pot, but if you plug into a line input, you won't get a signal unless you turn up the volume pot from "0". I might be wrong though!..
